Where I am in southern Queensland there aren't too many Koalas around, you see them in the local parks sometimes if you are lucky or if you go for a drive through the mountains they are everywhere.

drwayne: we had such a large amount of red backs at my house about 10 years ago, But now they are nowhere to be seen. The asain gecko population has increased 10 fold killing the red backs. It's getting quite hot in QLD now 35degrees c and we are getting worried about the snakes

Despite all this hurrah about killer kaolas.. there are very few credible reports of them outing people.. so few in fact the state media stoically claim them as fictional.
Here in SA kaolas roam around at dawn/dusk.. if you see one on the roads do not drive over it ! ..like a snake they grab hold and travel with you to where-ever.. and by then they're really pissed !

Like any other country, tourist destinations are the safest for foreign visitors unaware the dangers of fauna or flora.

Sorry for hijacking your post Millzee, but some clarity was needed.. your initial post looks like a kid's cphotoshop effort .. needed some mature realism, hey.

So whats the bottom line with all these introduced koala on the island. Let them stay until they have ruined themselves and the island to satisfy the bleeding hearts. Samething over here to. The further south in Canada the worse it gets. Many look at shooting a deer as a terrible act. Other people call it dinner. The government sets the numbers and areas a doe or buck may be shot. You apply every year and get your tags which limits where and what you can kill. Population control. I realize that I keep coming back to your little island issue but why cant you control population that needs controlling. People hunt and trap any number of what would be considered cute animals more in some years thqn others based on need. Whats so different over there, you hunt. Help me out here.

Open season on these guys would decimate them..they're not the fastest critter in a tree and easy target.
They were introduced here to help them regain numbers lost to mankind and his inhospitable townships and cities..

My state Govt's wildlife dept had the novel approach of putting birth control into a food supplement across the island.
Because the supplement is not across the whole island, in fact I understand it gets moved seasonally , the numbers are now manageable.

            Not every solution requires guns.....

I am still gunning for the little trespasser that they, what will be lost forever on that island as a result. It was stated as one of the greatest and untouched wildernesses around. It is being screwed over bigtime by these feral pests and its already to late as the damage is done. By restoring balance perhaps in the generations to come it could be looked upon qs a special place again. Bye bye outsider, time for you to get a new home on the mainland! Easier said then done, thats why its so importqnt the changes start now.

holy crap, I missed this post. Doc, if I visited the vast continent with no people and I was dressed in full Scottish regalia, playing the bagpipes and talking in a Mel Gibson interpretation of a Scottish accent would I scare off the fearsome beasties or, entice them more?
I await your reply with great anticipation, as any pointers would be appreciated.

There are people here now, Douggie .. there's several dozen Canadian ex Scots who have overstayed their tourist visas.. the rest of us ( all bronzed statuesque Australian sun Gods ) have tolerated them so far... however the bloody noises at night of sheep laughing at their sexual advances is keeping some awake.

                          Koalas are tree huggers, mate.
If threatened they latch onto the nearest tree/root and start climbing to the tree top's canopy.
Once there they dig in their claws and gnash their teeth at the foliage to ward off the threat... all the while grunting and grumbling.
A tartan wrapped upper canopy, or a eucalyptus treetop are one the same when one these fierce teeth gnashing bastards are threatened, Id guess.

perhaps your favorite cheesecloth coin pouch could come to new use?
I leave your journey's safety preparations to your own judgement, mate .

Thanks for the update....I think I will visit Tasmania instead, as there are only devils there and a lad who needs my help in understanding the fine points of RC model control and has a fine new home to put me up in with free room and board, plus a grazing area for wooly friends.

                              Douggie !

I see our Tasmanian friend has become an rc road warrior.
The few photographs he shares show steering is a skill yet to be learned.
Koalas and Tasmanian Devils have an uneasy alliance.. be careful walking around late at night.. if the ground critter scares you up a tree, the koalas will get you... and if you run, oh my ...
On arrival in TAS , border security will supply you the visitor's guide to tourist sites, pubs, restaurants and emergency services.

Let me know when you travel down to Australia's bushy triangle, mate.. I'll watch the news headlines and see how you go.
                              Cheers
