When I was a kid I always heard of tongue's sticking to frozen metal, of course I didn't believe them and had to try it on our screen door, conclusion was it does
I showed our kids this winter when it hit -35C outside our house how hot water vaporizes to a fog when you throw a glass of it up in the air, something we thought was quite cool.Comment

It's not Slash. It's a picture of yours truly taken at the party at Jeff Michaud's Insane Boats shop during the Nat's. Ate too much of the the Rasta Pasta

Many folks have done their best to explain this oddity. Carefully done, in a controlled environment and not taken out of proportion. Warmer water can indeed freeze faster then a colder water mass. Just remember. We are not talking a 30 or 40 degree delta. More like 10 to 15 degrees. I read about it many years ago when some graduate students did it. It is possible. But were not talking one container at room temp and the other on the stove boiling away. Heat is relative. And no mater how the Mpemba theory is explained it has yet to be defined. Just given a label. But it is cool to think about variances in a world we are told has only scientificaly defined laws.
Dig a bit deeper into particle theory, there you will see some very strange occurances that even defied Einstien's logic and unltimately led him to change some of his ideas. And is one of the reasons he could not arrive at a universal theorum on Quantum Mechanics. Photons embarrased at being watched? Hmmmm,.............makes you wonder what we really know about things.

Now that was unexpected.
When I placed warm water into my freezer.. the existing ice begins to melt as that water chills.
The net result was I went without iced bourbon that night.
So.. further empirical testing is unlikely, from a medicinal perspective..
Sorry Tony

A long time ago, I learned that hot water loses heat faster than cold water, hence this rumor about hot water freezing sooner. Remember that the glass of cold water doesn't wait for the hot water to catch up - it keeps cooling until frozen.Legend 36 sailboat, KMB Powerjet Ed Hardy Viper, ABC jet pwrd BBY Oval Master, ABC Hobby Jetski, NQD Tear Into's, HK Discovery 500, MickieBeez pwrd Jet Rigger!, Davette/Gravtix jet sprint, KMB Powerjet Pursuit, NQD pwrd Jet Catamaran!,Steam pwrd African Queen, Sidewinder airboat, Graupner Eco PowerComment

The explanation is pretty simple and I'm sure almost everyone will understand.
If you put two times the same amount of water in the freezer, one time with lets say 5°C and the other one nearly boiling under identical conditions the water which was boiling at the beginning will be frozen earlier.
This is because at the beginning parts of the boiling water will simply vaporize. Which means then there is less water left and this rest will cool down faster.
Everyone can repeat the test at home. But do not only check which will freeze faster but also compare the weight as part of the result. If the temperature is just 5°C for part 1 and 25° for part 2 the colder one should also be frozen first as the temperature of the 2nd one is simply not warm enough that enough water vaporizes to ensure less mass and that it could therefore cool down faster.
Have a nice evening,
