If you haven't already heard, on March 1st Google will be adopting a new privacy policy. You can read an overview about it here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/policies/privacy/preview/ (Who reads this stuff?)Essentially, they will be gathering info about 'you' and storing it for future use. It is to include a picture of you, your vital info (name, address or location (gleaned from 'smart' cell phone GPS triangulation and cell ID), ISP provider, phone number, cell number, personal contacts, surfing habits, operating system of your computer, and much, much more). They will glean it from all of their services (Youtube, G-mail, etc) and by following your moves with cookies and pixel tags. They will retain the right to use this info in ways that may surprise you. And they (will) store in several locations - even overseas. Talk about Big Brother. I'm going to disallow cookies on my computer where possible. This will mean having to re-enter my password on many sites (even OSE puts cookies on your computer) so will be a hassle to be sure. I'm also going to switch search engines to 'Startpage.com' which doesn't give out your IP Address, and allows proxy surfing.
I can see this is just the beginning of this rape of privacy and no doubt Facebook and others will follow suit. Consider that everything that you do on the web is in storage somewhere and if Google brushes up against it, they will save it for their 'purposes'. At the time of this post, they don't require a warrant when authorities query about a 'person of interest', and quietly hand over any pertinent info they can contribute. This happens thousands of times a year. 'Privacy' policy - not. Greed and power, yes. This is getting way out of control. You are encouraged to write your congressperson and tell your friends. This will change how you think and act on the web from now on.
