2010 Boy Scouts Rain Gutter Regatta

Proof that I'm losing my mind... I've been helping my son with his 2010 BoyScouts Raingutter Regatta boat...

Here's what we got done tonight thus far....

Have NO idea if this is actually going to work. We'll see once we get the sail fabricated, but it's going to look cool trying!

This was fabbed using ONLY the wood from the kit, and we used almost the entire block, just sanded in places, and glued the sponsons together using the leftover wood from cutting the tub.

Once we get the sealer on, we'll see if it actually floats, and figure out where to put the keel weight and the sail.

That's just proof you don't have nearly as many outriggers as you need in your fleet. I'd recomend one for every day of the week or every power class (which every is greater).

With the sponson setup, I don't see any need for a keel weight unless it's mandatory.

I only did one of these regattas with my son a few years back. The key seems to be a boat that tracks straight and has lateral stability. The rigger design takes care of the stability issue. Also, make sure the sail will not spin around on the mast.

No doubt! I'm not sure this is even going to work... It does float fine. I tested that this morning.

My gut tells me that I should have made it a Cannard instead, because I think it's going to "sponson steer" when you try to blow into the sail, but we'll see... Getting the keel weight and rudder in the right place might help that.

Probably would have been better to pattern it more after an America's cup boat!

Last year, our boat was a more conventional design, but had a step in the aft kind of like an early mono/hydroplane design. We used a sail like this one (this isn't our boat... just a pic from the internet):



I'm not sure on the rigger hull design, however, that a sail in the aft is the way to go... We'll see... I was planning on running the keel weight more towards the rear, with the sail either forward, or mid-ship. Some testing is going to be in order I think!

Oh, and I'm planning on cutting down the keel weight a bit. Might make it double as the rudder in fact... We'll see...

I don't know how much trial time you have before the reggata but I would imagine that with a conventional rigger a Mast near or just aft of the sponsons will be the go.
If it was a Canard I would go with the mast well aft, long story there.

The way I see it is if the sail is too far aft it will deffo sponson steer and if it is too far forward then it will nose dive. A bit of trial and error should be a hoot to read about.

Should be testing it this week... Mounted a rudder, and had to narrow the sponsons spread up until they are almost touching the center. Turns out there is a 2 1/2" maximum width... Still looks kind of cool... we'll see how it works.

I'll get some more pics once I figure out the sail location.

Also, I'm thinking that I may not need to add the steel keel/weight with this design... which will keep it lighter...

Design is too draggy... He got 2nd overall, but our last years design was much better... I recommended it to the Dad of the boy that won the whole thing... Basically, if you shape the bottom like a surfboard, the thing just FLIES down the course.

Tommy did win for the trickest design, however! :D Maybe a Neu 1105 on the back would have helped!!
