I saw a special on tv not long ago that explains how there is a big chimney type deal with hot lava ready to burst through at any moment. It has slowly been moving northeast as the continental plates move. Yellowstone is just the most recent spot as this blows through the crust every 600,000 years or so.

    We are due for another.

Yellowstone has always been an active hot spot, but believe it or not, it isnt where the next eruption will be. Places with active magma chambers are usually the last to erupt, since they typically never build up pressure. However if the plates do move substantially, it could merge open chambers with older chambers and then go boom
