Its always interesting that its the things that are most difficult to prove are the most commonly used "excuses" for time off. I wonder why??????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????

I think the answer is fairly obvious.

      Depends on your perceptions.
One would say that people are inherantly lazy or that people are nothing more than faceless drones.

Or you can say that they are overworked and have limited options in taking time off.

You wouldn't believe the number of people that are in the USA and taking from the Social Security because of depression.

Let me start naming a few,

        1) one of the guys that goes to hang out at the local hobby shop, about 35-40 years old and doesn't work.

        2) a guy that works out during the day at the local ymca with my father in law. 25-30ish and can't sleep at night.

        3) My cousin, a recovering drug addict. A brilliant person with an engineering background but has a bit of an arthritis in his back and also can't sleep. He's 38 years old.

ALL these people would appear to be normal if you saw them. The common denominator is none of them want to work.

How many more are out there? ALL useless leaches on society.

I used to work for one of the largest defense contractors in the world,(in their Canadian devision),,quite large in the Boston, USA surrounding area. I was there for 20 years until moving on 2 years ago.

The offered a program several years ago that gave us 50 sick days a year (yes 50) on top of our normal vacation time. We were not allowed to take it as a bonus, but if we were legitimatley sick, it was there for our use.

Its amazing how incredibly stupid many people are,,,,within weeks, there was already a trend developing of several people always being sick on either a Monday or a Friday (long weekend ,,,WOO HOOOO).

Within 1 year the program was removed. Several people were fired. I'm sure all the people who took those days off were REALLY sick..................

          A$$holes all of them.

I am sure that we all know someone who abuses the system. Like any other crime, it should be reported and those people should be turned in for their fraudulent claims. But there are some people out there who genuinely need assistance. So don't help these people abuse the system with our silence which ultimately costs us all. Report them.

On the other hand, there are employers who are so anal with sick days and vacation days that people often come to work sick and infect other people.

Where I work, I have 0 "sick days." If I'm sick, I either work, or stay home with no pay. That is unless I want to use one of my whole 7 vacation days for the year. Most people come to work sick.

But we need to understand that despite the people who abuse the system there are far more who are genuinely ill or disabled who need the help they are getting. Too often I think we focus on the minority cases of abuse and end up painting the entire group with a very broad brush.

                    Unfortunately Bill,
People these days will see one or two examples as representative of a larger group. Must be a Democratic Republican thing.

I guess this time it's your opportunity to be the MD with the inside knowledge?!?!

My personal experience at previous employers is that the use and abuse of sick time are about equal. No "far more" in either direction. And the abuse tends to come from certain individuals while the use is spread more evenly.

OTOH, I see most people here are reluctant to use their sick time because they enjoy their jobs so much. My use of sick leave has been scheduled for regular doctor visits.

No, I am saying that none of us, you included have all the facts nor do we have the expertise to know if she is in fact faking.

But that did not stop you from proclaiming her a fraud. Which was my point.

If we keep "feeding the bears", they will never leave.

For example, my younger brother was a train wreck in more ways than I care to ever want to admit. Every time he crashed my parents helped to pick him up. Until one day he finally left and got in some trouble. My father said go work it out, your not coming home. Guess what, he ended up fixing his problem, getting a job and things are looking better for him. Once the bear was cut off from food, he suddenly learned to find his own. There are far to many bears living off our system.

My aunt worked at the "welfare" office for about 20 years. The stories she tells are saddening. Here is a classic scam, a couple has a child but never get hitched. The mom claims she is a single working mom. So she earns about 20k a year, BUT gets free food, housing assistance, free preschool/daycare and free health-care. What she isn't telling is that the boyfriend is living with them.

Part of the problem, yes it's the moochers who are too lazy to work. But there is a complacency to enforce the rules. Many case workers don't really care if someone is cheating the system. They're just in it to collect a paycheck. As Bill has stated, there are people who truly need the assistance. It's just too bad that the depts. don't see or wanna see the abuse as much as we do.
