    US School System

I just spent the last 4 weeks interviewing people for a opening in a clerk position at the store. During the interviews, I gave a very basic 10 question quiz on percentages and basic accounting. I even gave them a calculator to use. See question examples below. The majority of applicants seemed to be in the late teen to 30 year old area. I was astonished at how many people got the basic math incorrect. I even had people that had college accounting listed on their resumes fail!

    Question examples.

If the sales tax is 6.25%. What is the sales tax on a item that cost $75.50 ________

If a persons sales total was $85.49, and he or she gives you one hundred dollars to pay for it. What would his/her change back be?_______.

I've been applying for a few law enforcement agency positions and every applicant has to complete a basic knowledge exam. I call them idiot tests for the obvious reasons.. On average about 25% of the people taking it fail..
But some of the questions I have seen are:
    What does FBI stand for?
    a) Federal Basic Instruction
    b) Federal Boating Institute
    c) Federal Bureau of Investigation
    d) Federal Body of Intelligence

If Officer Bob works a 45 hour five day week shift but takes an hour off for lunch everyday except Friday, how many hours did Officer Bob actually clock.

    Circle the correct spelling..
    a) Invistegator
    b) Investigator
    c) Envesogator
    d) Investagater
The RTR Nightmare- Electric King of Shaves
    Now with 540s- 62mph
New setup- Etti 150A's, Turnigy 2600s, 5S, X442s and a whole lot of cooling hoses

My father said for the heck of it, give it to Anthony(my 14 year old son). Thankfully, he answered 9 or of 10 correct, and in a faster time. The one he was wrong on was the most difficult one that dealt with interest rates and charges. I really didn't expect most of the people to get that one right, unless they had accounting experience.

That is why McDonald's has pictures on the cash register - and if you have a coupon they are required to get the manager.

Ya think that is bad? My last job, I got called into HR because some employees complained that they felt intimidated. Long story short, I was told to try to refrain from using words longer than 3 syllables.

Ya think? That as well as they will be good consumers. Purchasing items that they want more than what they need. It also keeps their advertising budgets low as you don't have to explain items in detail. Just put up a picture of a bright, shining object with an attractive person endorsing it, then just watch the cash flow right in.
