    Rio 51 Mod

Maiden voyage today. GPS'd at 57.8 MPH runing on all stock hardware including the prop. LMT 3080/ 12T, Schultze 60/140 controller and 10S LiPos.

60 should be no problem with some tuning.

I'll have to try and shoot some vid next week. I always try to do the maiden voyages alone in case of disaster (slightly less embarresing when you are alone)

Anyway, its big, fast and very stable and turns great.

      That's good speed for a 438 Kv motor. My 44 inch Sniper mono has a 3080/8 (656 Kv) also on 10S2P. I get mid 60's pretty easily using a x665/2. Lower 60's with a x460/3 and x462/2.

What props have you tried or plan to try?? Also, what does it weigh?? My mono is 18 to 20 pounds depending on the packs.
      Don't get me started

I'm happy with the speed, there won't be too much tuning required. You have to love it when its almost right the first time.

The current prop is 65mm x 100mm Grimracer and everything is nice and cool with this set-up. I'm tempted to just keep using this prop and play with battery placement and tabs. We will see.

As for weight, Its a plumper at about 18.5 Lbs. Fully loaded , sitting in the water not moving, the hull and deck line at the transom is JUST above the water.

The only problem is that a fair bit of water comes in through the shaft so I will probably install an auto bailer in the near future.

From personal experience with auto bailers(auto sinkers) fix the leaks!!!
Add tubeing around the flex fore and aft. The slightest lil anything will keep the flap of ball from sealing, and they WILL allow water to enter. My 1st gas mono had one, I plugged it due to sand or pcs of foam flotation a scrap of what ever left over from the build that didnt get blown out... Sand from the shoreline ect...
If I had the $$$$$ for a set up like that I would make sure to find and fix any leaks whatever it takes. My gas cat has open airholes and unless I get crazy and take it into rougher waters I barely get a few tablespoons of water in it.

Gas and nitro boats usually have air scoops that keep positive pressure in the hull. This will blow water out of the auto bailers. It probably will not work as well if you use them in a sealed electric hull.

I didnt even take that into account (thanks Readywatts) Actually due to temp differences air the air inside the hull being cooled as it hit the water may seal the auto bailer (if there is no blockage), and actually prevent the water for exiting.
If the hull is (airtight) the water by all rights will not exit untill the temps inside the hull cause a positive preasure. Thet are a neat concept But ost who have tried them usually plug or remove them. Dave

The auto bailers work by virtue of a venturi effect. Low pressure is formed at the exit when the boat is in motion. This moves the ball towards the aft end of the tube and allows water to drain out of the hull. When the boat stops water pressure moves the ball forward and seal the tube.

It is true that they need to be kept clean

While I love the smell of Nitro, I hate the smell of Gas. Also, both are to loud for my ears (and a lot of others) to put up with.

Electric is my thing, I love the looks of the boat, and the price was more than right so ............a conversion had to be done. As I already had the motor, speed control and LiPos, this only cost me around 300 bucks.

How much is the motor and speed control for your Rio?
I have a cat about this size and I am looking to go brushless.
                            Thanks
