    School me on EDF

    Electric Ducted Fan

I'm thinking that it would be neat to have a rescue boat that can go in the shallows, like really really shallow if needed. (think swampland in FL)

The big guys use fan boats. I want to build a boogie board fan boat style rescue boat.

    No rudder, just fan direction.

3s-4s 2700Kv-2000Kv 80-100 amps is my starting point.

Are there kits available? Should I try to adapt and EDF Jet fan? Should I attempt to build my own? (no)

    I'm all ears. (eyes)

See post #5, if you read all the way somewhere he has link for a build thread.

This is mine, still in the docks, with a 75mm EDF. It will have a cone rudder.

Hmmm... I have a cheap foamie EDF that I never did get to fly... Maybe I can just use the radio and stuff out of it... 6ch 2.4ghz Walkera... Brushless EDF is already there...

Hmmm. Cone rudder. What is this? I'm curious.

OK, I think a ducted fan will work awesome. I'm just curious how to steer it. Perhaps a lazy suzan type platform that is controlled by a servo?

I'm not sure if a typical vertical rudder will work against the force of the fan?

Ah, finally a purpose for that silly EDF foam jet that's been doing nothing for so long.

Hey figher, I think it's a cone on the back of the fan using a servo to direct the thrust, much like how a jet ski turns only with air instead.

Yeah, that would be cool! The term cone rudder didn't google well.

Correct, just some 1mm ply formed on a plastic cup. You could use just a cup if you find the right size. inlet is the same diameter as the EDF, outlet slightly smaller, to get some extra thrust. I'll add some more pics on monday, since the boat is in the office.

Thats a cool idea that way you only need to channels on the radio. I saw one that used two fans and no rudder system that was pretty cool.

Hey FighterCat. I just finished my DF Boogie Board rescue boat. I did a lot of reading, and I'm very happy with the results. I wanted a rudderless design too, but my main requirement was nothing protruding into the water. There's a lot of boats here that get tangled up in weeds and general guck. But after checking it out quite a bit, I went the air-rudder route. My boat runs awesome, can spin like a top on the water (360) if I want, and can push quite a bit. My only problem so far is it has a Novak car ESC that thermal overloads. Not a huge problem, since it resets itself in about a minute. I built it out of everything on-hand, except the Boggie Board ($10) and tupperware ($1.69). I'll post some pics asap.

Here's a link to trouble with steerable thrust:

The rudder on mine is all air and super responsive, except in reverse!

So nothing to keep the boat from turning instead of the fan. Thanks for the link, that saved me a ton of time!

I certainly wouldn't mind an air rudder and like your situation, I need something that will go in shallow water, like low tide oyster beds. Places I can't walk. (muck is 2' deep ya just sink!)

                              Nice!

The boogie board is basically Styrofoam, what did you use to cut it?
Also, how did you seal the cut area?

                              Thanks!
