Anyone do custom painting?
I painted mine over the winter and sprayed Testors enamel. It looked pretty good once it was all done (I sanded, primed, painted and clear coated) but it hasn't been very durable. I wouldn't recommend using that paint.
If/when I repaint, I think I will use something more of automotive quality.
Grand River Marine Modellers, el Presidente
IROC VUP, 25" Prince Mono, Mini Hydro, Classic Barrel Back, brushless Mini Rio and two Nitro Tunnels
Here's some sweet Toxic green I done that was used just from a can..
Then cleared..all in all it will usually cost me $85.00-100.00 a hull for paint but always does pretty nice.

Nice paint.....I'd like a metallic sparkle blue color. Did u sand and prime it? Kinds paint?
2 Coats of Valspar Grey primer, light sand soft grit, then the base green which is by Killer cans Alsa inc. then 2 coats of clear...then wax and boom done!

Can I just tape off the boat and take decals off and spray a couple coats over existing paint..Will it hold with decent paint?
After I pull the stickers off just spray primer first? I don't have to sand the boat first only sand after I spray the primer? Do I have to remove the blue paint off the top of the boat or can I just spray primer over it?

Dude you need to do a light sand over the first layer of paint...then get you coat of primer on next.
After about two coats of primer I usually take a scruff pad ect and soften the primer up.
Then do your base coat...
then re-sand again....
Then get a body shop to put 2 coats of clear if you dont have the Air and guns to spray clear..

Can't you just spray clear coat in can?
There is someone from rc universe who is going to paint it....I don't have the room to do it.
Hmm put up a boat that you painted that looks as good.... "Douggie" lol

Soften as in sand it to a smooth surface... as primer is sprayed on, it can be rough when its fully dried... whats bad technique is your smarta$$ on forums...no help at all man.

WOW LOL, Thats it...Id consider my Little Mono looks way better, more gloss and better cleared boat overall lol. My one picture sets my own example already man, All you did was take alittle masking and break it up..and let me tell you green white and yellow is a great looking combo for that Ul-1. " Douggie fresh" lol

Lacquers and enamels don't need to be cleared (but can be) as they will give you a gloss finish. The uros do need to be cleared as they are part of a BC/CC system. The base coats will not give you a gloss finish and are not meant to that is what the catalyzed clears are for. Alsa, House of kolors, and others have come out with spray can versions of their paint but it is not the same as the tins you get from a jobber.

As I have used Also on the Green Mono and it was dull after it was painted, It needed clear...
After 2 coats of clear it was waxed and looked great..

I trust that you will be playing with something when you are 61.

Nice looking boats, Douggie.
As we used to say way back when we first started seeing clear coating...clear is for queers. That was only because our spray guys felt they could do a better job without covering up the scars from sanding with clear. Emron, etc never used clear. Paint it and buff it out and it looked a mile deep.
I use clear but an't no queer...but I am willing to learn :)
Clear can strengthen and protect as well as fill in minnor marks in hull as it is sanded and painted...
