    Default Light quality Lipo?

    Hello gents,

I'm looking for lightweight 3s lipo's in the 6000-6500mah range,

I don't really need high discharge packs as the setup is a lightweight rigger running a 1406 Neu on 3s

race format is just over 6 minutes of oval racing

We run energy limiters so lipo selection doesn't matter too much. for this specific class the limiter is set at 58WattHr

Typically i run SLS lipo in my larger stuff but the 399 gram 3s 6400mah pack is $92 so just curious what's out there...

Onyx, SMC, CHNL what would you guys recommend ?

I have the Pulsar 3+ charger so that should keep the cells well balanced and happy.

I am using these to go in the sponsons of my 1/12 PB hydros. Not a lot of runs but good so far. I can weigh one in a bit here

SMC has new light weight packs called the HCL-HC line but they have 5500mah thenit jumps to 8400mah. the 5500mah is 352g and $40. basically the only way to lose weight is to have less battery. other than the miniscule differences in case material there isnt some magic bullet as far as I know in terms of both good and light.

at 58whr thats like 50 amps. Or am I missing something? you should be able to run the 5500mah pack.

    I have the CNHL G+ 70c 3s 6000 mAh and its spec says 502 g.
I also have the Onyx 6600 LHB 3s and its 515g.

Honestly I am a bit shocked you have a 6400mAh at 399g. Id question the real capacity on that one.
If that battery can get you through the race with the power you need I'd say stick with that one.

For SAW I'd say go with Onyx or SMC.

    Hi,

These are the sls I was considering
    https://www.stefansliposhop.de/en/ba...trx::2188.html

I’ll maybe try the smc 5500 pack but I think it could draw a little too much and shorten the pack life’s…

Well, there is depending upon interior construction of the battery, cable size etc the SLS 3s 6400mah 30/60c is actually lighter than the 3s speed 5100mah & the Xtron 5800mah by 40-50 grams..

Like you state, at $40 i can basically throw them away after every few races which is a good shout tbh.

For Saw, if you could get them - SLS is the way, pretty sure most of the boat records are set with SLS cells, (which at one time were almost identical to the roaring top 5100mah) Think even Tyler's record was set with some SLS Magnum v2's

I watched a L20 boat do 150mph on SLS speed cells about 3 months ago over in Germany..

I haven't raced since Covid so I'm out of the loop a bit, through I'm still keeping my eye on the scene, I suspect that Redzones are probably the lightest you will find that are up to the task, I've seen by far more redzones at races in the last decade than any other packs, their 6100 are <370g and $68, cheaper than the SLS you mentioned but still what I would call an expensive pack, and I would like more than 6100mAh as they must be getting close to empty at the limiter. Redzone also do a <390g 6300 that I would probably lean towards. When I used Redzones I got them from Ecomaster

One of the good things about limiters is that we don't really need expensive batteries any more, there is a small advantage in lighter weight in good water conditions but no power advantage at all, the last batteries I bought were Ovonic 6400 (I believe you would have met Paul Heaton at SAWs, he is a successful UK racer and recommended them to me to get back into it last year), they are <410g, but 2 for ?64. He has tested the Ovonic 6500 too, but they lack the punch of the 6400. I got my Ovoincs from Ampow

A 5500mAh pack won't be enough even if you were willing to treat your LiPos as disposable for competitive advantage (which would be a douche move), someone would contest it and you wont be at the minimum voltage (put in place to stop exactly that from happening) after the race so would be disqualified.

Yes, with a 10 second mill, 6minute race, and an in lap, it is about a 50A average on 3s using 58Wh.

    Thanks for the info Paul,

I'll hopefully get 1 of each and see what suits my setup the best, the 5500 SMC, a SLS 6400 and a redzone or two.
