I finally got my single work bench cleared up, so I can layup my cowl.

First picture is of my mould, all waxed up and ready to go.

The last two are with two layers of cloth, (1/16" thick when finished)

I will be ready to pull it Wed. morning.

Cowl came out fine, I used lots of wax.

second pic. - I use a dark masking tape to mark the outside of the cowl position. I also put a PEN line on the tape for center.

Third pic. - Line the cowl up on the center lines, and position it front to back there you want it.

Fourth pic. - Use a fine black magic marker to mark the cut out on the cowl, leave a little extra for sanding for your final fit.

Cowl all cut and sanded to fit.
I added some flotation to it just in case.
Boat is all ready for a water test, hopefully tomorrow.
If everything is Ok, Then I will put some stripping on the boat and paint and a windshield on the cowl.

    Hello Ray
It is made of Balsa wood. It is intended for the front edge of a Plane wing. (like a half round)
front to back - 3/4" Hight at the mounting surface - 1".
The top and bottom edge are very ease to blend with the top and bottom decks.
I put as much of thinned epoxy on it as I can to harder it up.
I then add two layers of very light fiberglass cloth.

O.k. thanks. I'll break out the balsa then.

SO it's 1" long or 1"high if it were standing on a table and the 3/4" is the dimension that mates up to the front bulkhead?

The flat side is 1' high.
The tip of the round, sticks out 3/4"

Interesting considering I'm dealing with 7/8" not 1". I wonder where 1/8" went? Maybe sanding the front bulkhead on the profile angle?? Anyway, thank you!

I install it so that there is 1/16" extra on the top and the bottom, and sand it off to match the top and bottom latter.

Hey Larry, I love this build.

I just got a Black Pearl kit from Pete and am excited to get building my first electric boat (I typically race gas and nitro). I have a few questions about your build if you don't mind sharing your secrets.

    1. Which pieces did you carbon laminate and do you think in retrospect that it was worth it structurally?
    2. When you carboned over the openings in the main compartment, did that end up sealing it off from the sponsons? I am considering doing this and adding some drain holes on either side.
    3. It looked like your motor and strut are off-center. How far off-center? Do you think that made a difference in your boats performance?

Tyler's boat has no laminate and no offset in the drive line. He had perfect heats with it at the CanAm. I can't say it was the boat though. I mean.....it's fast but the little bugger can drive. Super annoying.

Oh, I always try to make sure air can still get through to the sponsons somehow so they can dry out if the boat gets wet. Drain holes would do it but I know me. I'll forget.

So I have question for you Black Pearl guys. Mine runs great but it won?t start from a dead stop. It?s submarines. If I pull the batts back a bit it flys off the water. We are talking like moving them ? inch back. Frustrating. Otherwise it runs on rails. Also what is your got to motor? I?m running the tried and true 1515 Neu 2200 in it. Great straight line speed bogs a bit on the corners. Don?t think I could fit a bigger motor in it.

It's common for hydros to need to hit the water running

    Howard
You first give it enough power to drop the nose in the water.
Let off, and just as the tips clear the water moving backwards, Hit it hard.

    I run a TP 4070 - 2Y - 2250kv, Two 4S 5000's
The extra weight keeps the nose down at full flight.
