    Default Building the rear wings

Since I am new to this I need a few tips or direction to a thread on how to assemble the fiberglass rear uprights and wing from Rc boat company. I have all the parts just not sure how to put the
together and if there is any framework that goes inside.

    thanks!!

That does look nice, I read some threads where one guy used 1/8" aluminum for the mounts but when I got the plate it seems way to thick so I ordered a piece of carbon fiber hopefully that will be more suitable.

Not sure why that person is using so much more glass mat to reinforce them. They don't seem flimsy at all.

Make sure to put some foam inside of them to make sure they float in case the worst happens.

I have some half inch closed cel foam from a car restoration I did a while back. Any reason why I couldnt cut it into strips and use it in the wings? Will float and not soak up any water.

this is the best floatation for feathers and wings.
I realy liked the aluminum rods from RC Boat works ran at a 45degree angle from center to wing.

It would be nice if the Rod kit was available. I've been waiting for them for a year now to become available.

After I bought it once I have built my own since then. I do not use the big plate in the middle just ball links to the transom. I use break away tooth picks in the feathers to deck mounts. all the rest of the parts come feom Dubro.

As far as the support kit goes, I have been on the list to buy one for several months. Apparently the guy that makes the bracket on the transom has been ill.

    What retains the toothpicks?

What I do is when you drill your holes use a 3/32 drill bit. Get round tapered Tooth picks. Take one in each hand and from each side of the feather push the tooth picks intill they stop, you have to push hard to wedge them in. then use wire cutters and clip each side. Then do the other three holes the same. They will stay in the wing untill a crash, they will break away no harm to the Feather or mount.

I'm planing on using 4-40 nylon/plastic hardware to mount the wings. I pressed 4-40 pem nuts into the carbonfiber mounting tabs on my boat.

That might work , It might also rip the wing or damage the paint

Not quite sure how it would rip the wings or damage the paint. But stranger things can happen i suppose. I won't be racing the Hydro, no clubs around here. The plastic or Nylon screws are pretty soft and will snap. 4-40 screws aren't very thick. These were recommended by the folks over at Inlwaters.com . Very knowledgeable folks over there when it comes to Hydros. They tend to specialize on Hydros from going through the forums over there. Kind of like Offshoreelectric.com tends more towards Cats and Mono's

Lots of good points here! I got an order of nylon hardware and carved up some closed cell foam to fit. Also made a template for the carbon fiber mounts and cut some fiberglass veil to reinforce where the mounting holes will be drilled.

    Might as well dive in!

The last set of tail feathers I did I built them out of wood with layers of carbon. Sort of a hi-bred composite kind of thing. Strong as a brick poop house. Used nylon 440's to attach to the plates at the deck. Crashed......made an absolute mess of course.

I like Randy's thinking. Set them up so they can come off without wrecking themselves or the boat. Just enough to keep them on while racing.

I will get something for you asap. The boat is in the attic and not sure when my son will be over to help take it down.

Don't worry about it bro . You don't have to go out of your way to take the pic's. My Hydro is a multi year project . LOL. So no hurry. If you remember some time great if not that's cool too.

I went for it last night and epoxied the halves together with a chunk of closed cel foam in each. Used gflex with a little filler. Once the cure time is done these are goint to need a bit of sanding since they dont fit perfectly together, but it’s probably not going to take much.

Ended up needing a bit of filler on the exterior of the seems. I think they turned out well considering I don’t know what the heck I am doing :)

I felt steady enough and went up on a step ladder and took some pictures.

I could not get my son over long enough to get it down.

Funny I took the pictures with the camera all the same. Some how it flipped loading to the site.
