IMG_3080.jpgIMG_3084.jpgIMG_3123.jpgIMG_3171.jpgNew here to OSE, want to start out by thanking everyone out there who shares his or her knowledge and experience. We decided to take up a new hobby back in March when quarantine had us stuck at home so we started building our first ever RC boat. My 11yr son and 10yr daughter did most of the work. Used some of the rough outline plans found online (honestly can't even remember where we found them but they were more of a guide specific plans to follow). Now after about 3 months the boat is running!
We decided to 3D print the structural cross members in ABS plastic which offered a good opportunity for the kids to do some design work and use a 3D printer. The rest of it is mostly plywood 1/32" and 1/16" thick ordered online from an RC airplane shop. The hatch cover is 3D printed in PETG in two pieces and glued together. We followed a lot of the recommendations on OSE forums for Z-poxy coating, stuffing tubes, etc. I don't think we could have done it without SIG-MENT glue - that stuff is good, we give it 5 stars.
Most of the hardware components we purchased from the OSE Shop which we are very impressed with. We may have cheaped out little too much on the ESC/Motor but they are running well so far. We are using a Traxxas radio and transmitter (since we already have a Traxxas truck we can use it for both). My daughter designed the hull paint job and then masked and painted the flames with an airbrush herself. They named the boat Fireball.
Some trial and error we seem to have a decently fast boat that is tons of fun. When it planes up on the water it moves!
We plan to add an external whip mast for the antenna as the range is currently more limited than it should be. We are new to LiPo batteries - suggestion for anyone else out there also not familiar with LiPos read a lot about them before using and check both ESC and charger settings. If we did it over again we would have increased the hull width between the sponsons to better accommodate all the stuff inside.
