Selecting the right ESC

I am trying to figure out the right way to choose an ESC. I have a NEU 1521/1.5D motor. According to NEU the motor turns 1886 revs per volt, Max revs is 60,000 and the maximum amps is 110. I plan on using a 6s battery. The motor is rated at 1750 continuous watts with a peak of 3500 watts. By my calculations, 3500 watts with 6s is 138 amps. So if my thinking is right, I can run this motor on a 160 or 180 amp ESC. Somehow, it doesn't seem right. Am I on the right track, if not, I could use some educating.

Should ask more questions:

What boat are you putting it in?
Are you just going down and back zip zip or are you oval racing?

That kv is more suited to 4s oval racing. For straight runs like I asked about it may be fine.

A 180 will certainly run it but leaving yourself a nice cushion for spikes or for getting the setup not quite perfect the first time has merit. Like if it runs particularly wet the amperage can climb. Or a drive alignment issue. I would jump up to a Swordfish for that motor. The nice thing about the Swordy is you can log the amperage.

I haven't decided what boat to put it in. I have a 40" Delta Force and a 31" pursuit. It could go in either. I would use it for oval racing either "p" or "q" if I go up to 6s batteries.

The 1521/1.5d is the perfect 4s racing motor. The 180 set-up correctly (1815 to 1915 prop in a mono) in a say 30-34" boat will run great all day. Hey if you think 6s it too much drop it to 5s....No one says you have to run an even amount of cells.

If you set the Pursuit up for 4S2P racing then you could set your 40" boat up for an 8S1P setup too use batteries in both boats.

I can't suggest an 8S setup for a 40" mono but something around 850Kv -1000Kv for 8S is an area to start. I would use a 56mm diameter motor for the 40" DF mono if it was me, a 5684 or 5694 SSS motor would work fine. I ran an SSS 5684 1200kv in a 40" mono on 6S2P years \back and it ran well. On 8S it would pull less amps with 1000KV.
These are just ball park suggestions. I run a 1521 1.5D in my DF Cyberstorm (Equivalent to a Pursuit) on 4S2P for oval racing... well I used it in a DF33 before but my Cyberstorm is almost done and ready for it while the DF33 was rebuilt for limited racing class.

I ran props like a D/T X450, D/T x452 and trying ABC 17 degree rake props soon. U used to run an old SF200 2-6S esc but I'm upping it to a Castle XL2 I converted.

1521/1.5d on 4s in a Pursuit is a winning setup. I've raced that multiple times.
