Default Black Pearl II Hydro - 2020

Hi guys! I've been working on a new boat for the 2020 season. I'm hoping it will be the fastest, most stable Black Pearl ever!! In addition, a lot of folks have asked if we could scale it down for the limited class and scale it up for Q Sport. The limited spec boat will be 31" long and 16.25" wide. The full P version will be 33" long and 17.25" wide. Q size is still TBD. All boats will have the Tyler Davis sponson design, sponson AOA of 3.5deg, and bottom kick-up of 2deg which has proven to be robust. Here's the design...

Skins are really easy to make, although everyone seems to dread them and wants them to be laser cut! Can?t really mess them up. Make a stencil, trace, cut oversize, glue, and sand the remainder off. I?m using some tape here to get the shape and then transferring it over to the wood. Same tape can be used for both sides.

Pete, I started calling mine Interceptor 2.0 Just seems fitting with it being a tic smaller than a Pearl. Then the larger version could be a Pearl 2.0?

Spent a good 1.5 sanding slots last night. Sigh. Hate that part.

This thing has some really smart elements Pete. Pretty excited to get going on it. BTW, the canopy mold from Ty's boat fits this new tub better than it fits the Pearl. Go figure.

For those wondering why bother when the original was so solid on the oval..........well.........cuz building is super fun. It's not always a quest for .25mph more. If you find some more speed great but there's more too it than just that.

I don't want to speak for Pete but I suspect he wants to see one go before he starts moving any. The last one looked crazy cool but performance was marginal.

I'd like to hit that Florida race to turn some laps.

Yer fault Kevin. We'll talk about that more later. Stop by Larry's tonight and talk Tyler into it too. You'll have to get him to stop buying race cars long enough to save some dough. He's without a sponsor now. haha

Definitely want to get some lap time before sending any of these out there. I do have the original versions available if anyone wants one. I finally gave up on the local maker spaces and invested in some vacuum form equipment, so I'm back in business for cowls. I want to make an Atlas type cowl soon to eliminate the secondary nose cone.

Ty? Budget racing??!!! Does he know of such a thing? Here's one: Tamiya Grasshopper, upgraded to 540 motor. 17.5 buggy class.

I want to get out to Larry's. Maybe the day of our meeting? My 1/12 pancar is begging for attention and I hear they have a new on-road course.

Ty has a couple Tamiya cars. They suck just as hard as you remember. Road cars. I wouldn't call it budget racing. I would call it "Dad is making him pay his own way on some of this crap". The cost of traveling to multiple races times 2 dudes is a bit much for dear old dad.

He really really wants one of these LSH kits. I built him two Pearls for him without building myself one already. I told him ME first grasshopper. I just laminated the double bulkheads Wednesday night. Posting a build thread on the MMEU Facebook page.

On a different subject, I finally gave up on maker spaces in our area (Techshop went bankrupt, Village Workshop is now out of business). I invested in some vacuum forming equipment. I'm pulling 25gallons to about 27.5inHg. Nice sharp radii and excellent detail. The tanks are only dropping to 20in after the pulls. That's not too bad! Very happy! Mostly that I don't have to deal with driving/paying and hoping that other shops stay in business.

Maybe we should check Kevin's dumpster for a laser. His junk is probably 500 times more machine than you would ever need to burn kits.

Was able to cut about 80 fins this week. Hope to bend them next week.

I still think the fin on Ty's is holding it back.

OK, back to the build. I sanded the ride pad framework flat in prep for the pads. I usually use this super long sanding block to keep both sides in check.
