Strut adjustment

Hi all, this may be a silly question but when making strut adjustment or angle adjustment on a catamaran should I be loosening off the motor collet first then tighten once the adjustment has been made, or do I just need to make sure there is enough gap between the drivedog and the strut after the adjustment?
