Default 48 inch open mono race build info

Hey guys, I am a gas racer looking to build a 48 inch ARD Assault mono for the open mono class in my district. I scrolled through a bunch of threads here on the site and one common theme seems to be the castle 2028 motor. Seen a lot of different ESC’s used, Castle, MGM etc. This would not be my first FE boat but definitely the first one this large. I wanna make sure it’s durable and plenty fast. I already know the hull is the best rough water mono around for heat racing (IMO). Thanks for any and all help and suggestions. John

What's your budget? Low end would be the 2028 and etti 220 esc

    NEU 2230 1Y 725kv, Castle Hydra HV200, M cut Octura X465, 10s2P.

This set up (as is) held the IMPBA T Mono 1/3 mile oval record and still holds the 1/4 mile oval record.

And Ken, it will hold the 1/3 record again...

Hey Gene, thanks for the reply. Low end is fine with me as long as it can get the job done repeatedly. How hard would I be pushing that motor? How long can the bigger motors go between rebuilds if they need to be rebuilt at all?

Doug, thanks for your response. That boat is impressive, the price on the motor is as well, lol. Any idea what the top speed was in that video?
I’ve seen quite a few gas Speedcrafts run well also. Does Castle still make those ESC’s? I thought I heard they were not.

I never put a GPS in the boat but it will run with the best out there. The motor doesn't know it's in the boat. I'd love to put it in a 54-55" boat with more control.
I had no idea the motor was 8 bills now. Yes Castle is gone. Etti, ZTW, or Swordfish would be your go to control now.

I personally have never had an issue with the Castle 2028 and see many people on here use them. For the price imo can't be beat. Maybe someone else can chime in here. And I prefer the etti esc's a little hard sometimes to program you need a quiet place and need to concentrate on the beeps and tones.

    Hey Geno,

I cut the tongue off like the M series Octuras. https://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pr...ctura+M+Series
They are progressive pitch props so the tongue can keep you from getting the most out of the prop. You can see in the video that the boat doesn't need the additional blade area to get up. I wish they offered the whole X series in a M series. It sure would save a lot of work.

Default 48 inch open mono race build info

Thanks for the info Gene and Doug. I talked to Ken Haines at our race In Broward this weekend and picked his brain a bit. He likes the Neu 2230 motor as well.

Thanks for the suggestion Ray. This type of set up would need to be run on 10S correct?

The price on the 2028 seems legit.

Again, good info, thanks. 2 or 3 blade? I believe someone said a 270/2 for their 2230/ hydra setup?

I almost hate to ask this last question because it’s probably going to be like someone asking which two stroke oil to use over on the gas forum but… Any recommendations for batteries for this type of set up? Are you guys using four packs whether 8S or 10S for the extra weight and/or COG adjustability?
