    Default PRO BOAT UL-19XR_Bashing a UL-19 into an outrigger...

    I've started on an idea that came to me. I replaced the hull for my UL-19 due to cracks. I'm switching the electronics to the new hull.

    Then the thought came, why not re-purpose the old one.

    I've started bashing it, here's a video of what I've got done...

    Pretty cool.
    What is your plan for the rest of the open areas, Wood, or fiberglass?

    Fiberglass. I plan on making panels on a flat surface, leaving a dry fiberglass overhang to tie them in. And using carbon fiber plate for formers and the transom.

    The fiberglass I ordered finally came in the mail. Only one way to find out if this will work. I'm going for it...

    Here's a test swatch on contact paper. A "gel coat" made of epoxy and micro balloons, then two layers of six ounce fiberglass.

    It does release...

    Here's the mold form I made. It's straight and square. I plan on molding the bottom and sides as one piece. I'll unscrew the sides to release it...

    The bottom and sides covered with contact paper. It's actually like a sheet of tape. It's called contact paper tho...

    And three layers of 6 ounce fiberglass with full strength 30 minute epoxy.

    I stopped shy of the corners. I'll roll the fiberglass back after curing and lay a bead of the epoxy and micro balloons mix in the corners.

    Then lay down the "gel coat" on each side. After that sets, I'll epoxy the fiberglass up the sides...

    Here is all I'm using from the UL-19 hull for the tub. The nose, the lip for the canopy and the back corner pockets for the vertical fins.

    I've taken several measurements before cutting it up in order to qualify it in the new fiberglass tub. For the nose angle of attack mostly and the bottom rear relief angle.

    Interesting how the original bottom turned into a twisted mess without support. The lip for the canopy is quite thick and rigid tho. Seems to be holding its shape...

    Setting the nose in the mold to layout the sides with a magic marker. I've also raised it 3/8" for more depth, because of the extended top length. On the angle it has to be, the transom would be too short...

    I tilted the mold on it's side. Laid down the gel coat, then kept transferring the magic marker outline as I epoxied down each layer of fiberglass...

    Here's how I increased the depth of the tub and maintained the nose angle of attack. I'm going with a 1/4 round air dam on the bottom.

    That's a piece of square balsa in there, covered with blue tape so it will release. That raises the nose and molds in a square corner on the bottom. I will fiberglass in a piece of 1/4 round after pulling it from the mold...

    This might work out! Here's the tub pulled from the mold. I have a couple of voids in the corners to fill. Got mostly full penetration of the epoxy since I did it in layers.

    I think it's a surprisingly good result for not using vacuum. I spread the epoxy with a small 1/32" plywood spatula, pressing it into each layer at the same time. It feels strong, with good integrity throughout...

    And a view looking back at the transom. Again, I left extra fiberglass length to tie it all together.

    Next is a setup to make a section to extend top.

    I've ordered carbon fiber plate for the transom and for formers that will be spaced out in the tub. I'll put it back in the mold to glass it together and hold it straight and square...

    There's a 1" x 6" board in there and eight screws with clearance holes thru the sides of the mold. This setup will give me adjustable clamping force to put a curve in the 1/8" plexiglass.

    I'm lining the plexiglass up straight with the lines I've drawn on the inside, and I've shimmed it a bit so the force equalizes and the plexiglass curves evenly...

    Next I tighten the screws to check how much curve I'm getting. I checked this at several places along the full length...

    Then I'll lay down the contact release paper and fiberglass in these corners with the fin pockets. It has to curve so the fins tilt out at the top at the original angles.

    I'll mold the back hatch and the hatch opening with this setup, so it has the same curve...

    Measuring and laying out with magic marker for the hatch. I'll lay up the hatch first. Then cover it with saran wrap and mold the lip right into the top piece...

    That's all for tonight. Gel coat down, three layers of 6oz. cloth, fully saturated with full strength 30 minute epoxy.

    I'll let that cure overnight before pulling it. I have to cut it to size and radius the corners before I can use it to mold the hatch lip...
