    Unhappy ABC props bending

I'm having trouble with several ABC props bending the blades during running.
I don't know what alloy they are using, does any one know & if they can be heat treated. If so what temp/time.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Eric.

what motor rpms are you doing ? are you thinning out the blades too much ? you can,t heat treat properly unless you have the correct kilm etc etc.

    Thanks for the reply rol243.
My props have minimum thinning, motor RPMs in the 33,000 to 35,000 range under load. I have access to heat treating kiln.

there has also been issues with Octura props busting off blades at high rpm,s. i would give Chris [ Dasboata ] a pm as he would be the guy to get better info from.

you are throwing blades only at 35k RPM ? jeez... makes me wonder what my hardened abc would do at 60k.

Yes you can heat treat the ABC props. I don’t have my notes handy but there is a recipe that works.

Hi Tyler, if you could PM some temps & times when you get an opportunity would be greatly appreciated.
I've got a lot of these de pitched and hi lift (ie Bent back blades) props that don't work any more and I'm reluctant to spend too much more $ on these props if they can't handle the power.
I'm happy with the speeds they produce over the Octura options, but I can't keep them from bending, some are after just 2 or 3 laps.
I was trying to keep with standard props rather than modifying them too much.
    Thanks Eric.

Jim at ABC posted this awhile back.

Make sure the prop is clean.
Stress relief @340'F for 20 min.
    Temper @ 400-600'F for 20-60 min.
Tempering(aging) time and temp depend on the size and personal preference.
    Air chill.

Thanks for the info Doug, sounds like there is a little room for different amounts of hardness.

I wonder if this would be the same for Octura Props?

you would think all Berillium props would take simular heating temps and stainless steel props would be different.

I don' think the ABC props are Berillium copper, they are another bronze type.
That was the main reason I was trying to find out what temps & times were needed for the ABC props.

I just ran my Revolt this weekend with a stock set up and a brand new Octura X642 and came out of the drink with a bent blade.

Jim at ABC told me to set props on copper plate while in oven. I guess this heats and cools prop more evenly. I purchased copper plate from McMaster Carr.

Why are the most popular ABC props not in inventory? Whats the hold up?

You must remember that props are not Jim's full time job, he has a business to run also, they are a side job for him.

My Phil Thomas SS 45 seemed to be running slower than usual so I just chalked it up to my Lipo's probably on the way out. Yesterday I was looking over my props and noticed that the Ocura 452 that is my go to prop on that boat has blades that are bent back. One blade is worse that the other. First time for that.

If the prop was thinned at all, was it hardened after the prop work?

No I never hardened the prop after I thinned and balanced it. I def don't thin them as much as I used to. I came from nitro and gas boats and quickly realized that most of the stuff we learned from nitro and gas doesn't jive with FE boats. I'll mod up a new 452 next week and not thin it as much and see what happens.

That formula was for ABC props.
Octura props are a different animal.
