    motor reccomendation for bj29 v3 on 6s

thinking about changing the motor on my v3 .the included 2000kv 6 pole just makes too much heat on 6s and my efforts to keep it cool aren't helping enough .

i see guys on youtube boasting they are running the leopard 2200kv and hitting mid 60`s(mph) but isnt that already the issue with this boat ?>too high a kv for 6s?

    going by the ose specs

[OSE Suggests 20,000-35,000 total rpm for boats. We suggest most Fast Electric Boaters should run in the 25,000RPM range for Sport Boating or 30,000RPM Range for racing.]

    so 2000kv x22.2=44,400 / on 4s 2000kvx14.8=29,600

i want to run 6s because i already invested in those lipos so....

i am thinking more along the lines of the leopard 4074 or 4075x2

the 4074 offered here (in stock) 1650kv x22.2=36,630

or if i wanted to push it the x2 series offers the 1750kvx22.2=38,850

i am still new to boats and trying to figure this out .when i did have a 4s lipo setup the best this boat ever ran was like 34mph on the stock prop .i wasn't too impressed with that .
so i stepped up to 6s and i am happy with the speed .best of 51.4 but consistent 50mph on the stock system with a cnc 440/3 blade .but the heat is high .

so ,i want to run a 6s system that will get me over 50mph, 60 mph be nice and run consistently and stay cool so i don't have to be checking temps all the time .

sometimes i think the can in this boat just isnt big enough .or its turning too much rpm on 6s but thats how they sell them .
sorry so long ,help me! lol

Rafael said that the motor from the IM31V3 was a good upgrade for the V3 cats. Its a 4068 4 pole 1750kv. Might be a starting point in terms of what specs to shop for.

My opinion. The stock ESC isnt enough. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-...r-cooling.html This one is great... The leopard 4074 1800kv works good paired with this ESC. Just dont get crazy with prop, Octura 645 is pushing it. Again just my opinion.. I ran the 1800kv without fail but when I ran the 2000kv the motor shorted and literally melted the ESC. Could have been bad luck or just pushing too hard but both setups ran cooler than stock.

The larger can of the "40" series motors can help dissipate heat better. They also have more torque and will work less than a "36" series motor for a given prop/setup. I have a few Leopard motors, but if I was buying my next motor I would try a TP Power Motor. I have read and many people here will attest that they deliver great power and are very efficient.

A note on brushless motors and efficiency:

A motor has a listed KV, but efficiency loss actually delivers less KV
Example, my 1450KV motor if it was 90% efficient would deliver 1305KV.
When you charge up your LIPOS, it's actually 4.2v x 6 cells, or 25.2 volts, not 22.2 So my rig should be capable of 1305 x 25.5 = 32,886 rpms (unloaded on the bench whith fully charged battery)
Then you have to factor in the motor under load and those efficiency losses. In my datalogs my average loaded rpm for my boat is about 28,000-29,000 rpms depending on which prop and how the hull is set up.

It took me a long time to work through all of this with my first boat, it's been 3 years I'm boating now and I just start to feel like I got a handle on it. Just keep asking questions, there are a lot of smart guys here who have done it all before. Don't just throw money at motors, props, and speed controls.

TP4050 4Y and a higher amp esc. My buddy runs this motor in a v2 geico with a Mamba Monster X / M445 and its dumb on 6s he can barely keep it on the water. Probably 45-50 on 4s.

ok ,thanks everyone so far for your replies . let me add that i am not just looking to do fast passes ,speed is nice but i want to run the boat too .
i am thinking 1750kv leopard x2 motor . but that could change .
another well known cat runner says get a 15-1600kv for 6s and a larger prop . theres no rush here and i tend to over research everything before i do it . that said i am going to go check some videos out .

nice run i did watch it , fast passes are nice but i want to be able to run ,not 3 or 3 1/2 minutes .how much run time you get ? i run dual 3s 5000 50c .i can usually get about 8 minutes of run around time .

i will have to try this out on the stock prop again and check the temps . all this temp checking gets old fast .thats why i want a motor that will run cool and run for the duration of my packs .

                    thanks for jumping in .

That setup was with SPC 7200mah packs. Running it like that with that prop (octura 448 not detounged) was running about 6-7mins. <thats a long time.. Ill be running one set of 5000mah and another set of 5800mah with the new setup. The 7200s are huge. Ill let you know how it goes.

I am thinking of upgrading also, so I have been following this thread with interest. How are you guys finding room in the BJ 29 to mount the 180 esc and larger motors? Are you using the same mounting tray that comes in the BJ or having to change it ?

                          Thanks Leadfingers

hey leadfingers , have you tried yours on 4s with say a x642? i really didnt get a chance ,i sold my 4s lipo setup and only ever tried it on stock prop on 4s(managed about 35mph) . if this thing can hit 50 on 4s with the right prop and stay cool i would invest in a new 4s lipo setup .

and the v3 since it doesnt have the plastic inner cover can use bigger motors . i hear the 4074 probably as big as you can go the longer 82mm can has fitment issues i have read .

The V3 will not do 50mph on 4S, x642, and a stock motor. It does 41mph with that setup and bounces.
