That being on hold it is time to move onto the rear of the boat. I dug around and found this old school(Hughey I believe) gear.

That is about where I am at with this one now. I am leaning toward making some kind of cover that looks like an outdrive leg or something just to clean it up back here.

Are you concerned at all about the flex in the well nuts?

I thought that was a bonus. A little vibration damping. That is all there would be.
Do you think otherwise Rick? Have I misthought ?

I've used well nuts in a non-RC application and the bolt tends to "float" a little. Looking at your pic, I can't see you being able to compress the well nut much either. I'm picturing how much a full size car engine moves under acceleration. This won't move even close to that, but this a big boat with a big motor so you have to expect some movement. Aside from having someone hold boat in place in the water while you hit the throttle, I don't know how you could even observe the movement.

The wear point will be where your flex exists the stuffing tube. Maybe assume some movement and think about how to deal with the wear area.

That makes sense. We'll see how it all fits together. Those rails are about 1/4" thick so they should get a firm grasp.

It'll be how comfortable you are tightening the screws into the well nuts. The tighter, the less float you'll have.

Well this project made it back on the table. I had another boat started for the winter but my custom parts will be awhile I think.
Winter has also had different things in mind for my time, haha!
I changed my mind on the S bend in the flex and redrilled holes for the more standard straight shot. The motor is mounted! I also picked up a 5” extension rudder for this one and got it mounted. I’ll tidy the steering gear next and then setup batteries based on CG.

Well I have this one down to paint work on the lid. I got a UBEC wired in and wired up a Flier 300 for 12s operation. Stuffing tube in, servo and rod in.

Foam in for locating batteries and Rx in. I’ll get a couple more pics. So now I’m waiting on a 1/4 flex and paint and good to go

Oh yeah, built a funky oil reservoir

Wow, that's a blast from the past. And I thought I had projects sitting on the shelf 😂. What size is the Proteus motor you've got in there?

It’s bigger than the 2028 I believe. I’ll go measure.
Yeah I have a scratch built jet boat here too that just needs the gear installed. Built it in 2008 as I recall?? Lol .
    Never seen water!!

Alright boys. It took some patience but I think I have a pretty good match on this thing. It needs clear yet.
I still have the cockpit and windshield to do but it’s close

Ken-NJ made his own hatch which is how I got this one. He built his as the KAAMA Racing team boat. It’s on here in build threads just search his name and you can get an idea of how to build your own. Finding a replacement factory one will be next to impossible.

Well let’s see how this turns out. A much slimmer windshield than it came with.

And the cockpit area is coming along (seats just placed ATM)

And at long last, just a flex to cut to length, install a prop and hit the water...

    My U-pol Clear worked well!

Long time no hear pal. Thanks

So it got in the water today
Well mechanically speaking it went well. No water in hull, everything cool, was capable of great speed, BUT.....
As soon as good speed hit it was hoping all over.
Then I remembered that I epoxied an edge to the rear of the hull.

This hull trailing edge was real round and of course a sharp edge is wanted. I had left that to cure real good so I could sand it. A month should be enough. lol.
And upon sanding and grabbing a straight edge for it I discovered terrible concave in the bottom that made it up to 1/8” about 3” ahead of my epoxy work. SOOOO, more work to do and there goes the pretty bottom paint! Anyone say Speedcote?

    Cheers Buddy!
She looks pretty in the water.
I feel for ya, I had once a terrible experience with a Insane Mono boat, but after I trued the bottom, I loved the hull, of course mine didn't have the pretty paint.

Yeah I hear you. I got this from the owner of probably the biggest R/C shop in the province, but it doesn’t mean they knew what to do before paint. But at least I didn’t pay for that paint. I got the hull for $150. It’s just gonna have to have a black bottom.

What did you use to true the Insane? I did my Pursuit with glazing putty but it is showing after a couple years(little cracks).

I am afraid I used Glazing Putty. I have run the boat for three years, I better check for cracks.....

Amazing build thread! You started this in 2015?! Congrats on getting it wet!

I love the paint scheme, so interesting how the black & white checkoring is woven thru out, from front to back and down the sides.

Beautiful job on the cockpit too...

May I ask how fast you expect to get from this setup, and run time? What motor and battery setup did you end up with?
