some help needed with motley crew

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for some help. I purchased my first boat and I am way out of my wheelhouse. It has a stock motor and an 80 amp esc installed and I will be running two 3s 40C packs. Just for starters, where should I start for a prop? I am looking for speed more than anything, I have a habit of really pushing my toys. I am sure I will have ore questions but this is where I want to start.

Welcome! There is tons of great reading here at OSE and in this section on the Motley Crew and Lucas oil. Many veterans have shared different setups in regards to motors, batteries, etc.

Stock the MC has a 60 amp esc, so yours has been changed out. Also, I haven't seen many run on 6s, mostly 4s or 5s. Getting the correct setup with motor, esc, batts and prop will yield top speed and a setup that is consistent and fun.

I saw one run for the first time yesterday. I was pretty impressed. I wouldn't run 6s on the stock setup. The one i saw yesterday was on 4s and 5s. I think on 5s you'll be impressed. To run 6s I think you'd need to upgrade your esc for sure and I'd recommend not running that motor on 6s much either. Try it on 4s and 5s, when it's adjusted correctly, it's a pretty fast boat. On prop, I'd say something like an x642

The esc should be fine and the motor...... Well there is always upgradeable ones out there.... :) I will do some more digging on a prop I guess.

I've had good luck with the Grim Racer or GR 42x55 prop and the octura m445 prop, both sharpened and balanced, which makes a big difference.

Thanks alot pistol! I will give the occur a a shot. Also i think I will bite the bullet and upgrade the motor right away to the leopard 3674 1400 kv. Anyone else have a similar setup on 6s?

I'd be wary of an 80A esc on a 6s setup. That will be ok on 5S. For 6S I would really think about a 180A ESC like a seaking unit, that would be bulletproof. If you do some research you'll find many many many cases of Blackjack and Impulse owners burning up their 80A ESCs on 6s.

What if we kicked it down to 4S? running the same 80 amp esc and going with the Leopard 3674 motor at 2200kv backed with 2 5800 mah 40C Turnigy batteries?? Should be 200 amps available and swing that motor at 32,560 rpm. I would think that would make for a pretty quick yet safe setup. But what do I know, if I had all the answers I wouldn't be asking the pros!!

even used the stock 60a esc with this set-up once: no problem
but keep in mind that the stock esc has a lvc set at 12volt so lvc is useless at 5s !

These are nice solid ESC's for an RTR... http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Boat_ESC.html - lotta guys on this forum run them, myself included.

There out of them at the moment, might wanna keep an eye on them to see when they get back in stock, then get a couple.

One thing I have noticed, lotta people say if using 5S / 6S with those ESC's, it would be wise to either use a receiver battery pack or a UBEC - instead of the built in BEC to help take a load off the ESC.

How do you run 5s in a boat? Balance wise?

I decided to go with the Leopard 3674 2200kv motor and the Seaking 180amp esc. I backed them with (2) 2S 5000 mah 45C Zippy batteries. I flipped the motor mount backwards to clear the bigger motor but it is now looking like I will have to trim the flex and stuff tube. Has anyone else threw a bigger can inside using the stock mount? Are there any tips on what did/didn't work out for you?

I installed a 4082 1600kv the same way but made the stock mount strong with a piece of aluminum. I used a longer collet by trimming down the shaft a bit and had to cut down the stuffing tube/liner just a little bit. Just make sure everything is aligned perfectly.

That is a concern that I have, as it sits now it doesn't look like the flex and motor shafts do not line up that great. Cure??

You need to either buy one of those stuffing tube adjustable mounts or make some kind of wedge to properly align them. I originally made a wedge with plexiglass but I didn't glue it in place and learned to hard way. It came loose in a roll over and caused so much friction that it warped the flex along with destroying the liner.

That part goes on your stuffing tube, use it to align the stuffing tube and the motor shaft. That way your flex cable and collect are aligned, no drag created.

Bend? You shouldn't be bending anything, the amount of movement needed should be very little

Mine was gutted, ran a bigger motor for a while, kept bending the motor mount everytime it flipped, installed one of these

Trimmed the stuffing tube and moved the motor to where it lines up properly before I glued in the mount.
Mine is back on stock power because the hull was in danger of self destructing. Hatch and top are FULL of spiderweb cracks from high speed crashes.
Swapped in a rudder from a sv27 with a watercooling pickup, installed two outlets in the side of the hull so I can see water exiting the cooling system, motor and esc are cooled separately.
Epoxied a pair of plywood rails the length of the motor compartment because the hull bottom was flexing with the new motor mount, epoxied some carbon arrow shaft pieces into the hatch in place of the plastic "braces" that kept popping off then put another layer of epoxy and glass cloth in the hatch.
Finally painted it in the Amsoil Teague racing colors because I couldn't stand looking at the stock graphics any longer, sorry I think it's dumbest looking paintjob I've ever seen on a boat. Not sure if it's named after them but I can't stand the band either.
If the Lucas Oil had been available back then it would have been the one I bought.

You do not need one of those shaft things, won't help in your situation anyway as you are doing some serious changes. On mine I don't have much more than 1/4" of stuffing tube showing inside the hull, almost all the way back to the square bump you mount the RX to. Have about 1/4" flex showing between the stuffing tube and motor collet when everything is installed.
I also ditched the stock flex shaft before it broke and installed a Hughey, have to cut them to length, you will need to at least trim your flex so it is short enough to work.
If you go to my profile and look in the photo album there is one picture of the motor mount and trimmed stuffing tube.

Thanks siberianhusky!! I just found that the UL-1 flex is a perfect fit when flipping the mount around. I will be buying the upgraded one off of here. I have already added the rudder with the water pickup. As this is my first boat, I will run the dog snot out of it this year and if the hull lets me down, I would like to get me a fightercat hull to drop the electrics into. We will see.....
