Default my ultimate seaking 180 cooling block

Just wanted to show my cooling block I just made to better cool a SeaKing 180. I just didn't think that little heat sink and two small cooling chambers was really up to par. Cool thing is if I blow an esc, I can move it to the next one....and I think it's pretty sexy too!

Here the start. Nothing fancy. Solid piece of 6061 aluminum

Making sure it fits. Pretty snug...

Let's see what it looks like with the top on....

Are you wondering yet where the water is gonna go? Hmmmm. I wasn't gonna drill a couple holes and loop them. I wanted capacity. Alot of it. Might was well. So it has two chambers connected by a small slit. Guess the idea is to slow the flow a little. Sounds good anyway! Lol

I know my machining of the chambers isn't perfect. Old manual mill and eye balling.

And after drilling a few more holes, sealing it up....it's done. Ain't it purty?

Couple more pics... (I have to pic up fittings tomorrow. ..I broke one just now over tightening it)

I didn't like that silly loop....just something else to get in the way so enters and exits on same side. Simple.

    Travis, that is wonderful!
I wonder if it is practical to orient the water fittings in-line with the wires , i had toyed with the idea that they would enter/exit on the top vis
    a 90 degrees fittings.
This should have been the SeaKing 180 V3!!!!!

Personally I would of gone with an aluminium top plate to get better heat dissipation, the carbon plate will retain more heat.

The heat dissipation will be through the water flow. What good would an aluminum top plate do to dissipate heat in a small closed up chamber that will retain the heat anyway?

Thanks! The water lines actually could be done in any direction but for my layout this is best.

when are you going to try it? considered doing this to my 180, but it runs cool in 2 setups 4082 1600kv on 6-s. rigger and cat.

Why do you think they use aluminium as a cooling plate & not carbon, because the aluminium dissipates heat & carbon does not. You need water to cool as well as metal for heat transfer & dissipation, copper cooling plates work even better than aluminium but at extra weight.

I'm not gonna argue with you. On the internet, someone always has to put there .02 in and hasn't even tried or made one themself. I'm sure with that being said you know what your saying as fact, right? Like you tested my cooling block? No. You haven't. And too add to it this isn't the first one I've made and it DOES do its job just fine with a carbon top plate. Thanks for your
    input tho. Smh

Not meaning to upset anyone but offer constructive criticism that I personally welcome with anything that I do. Take motor cooling jackets is commonly known that the silicon type water coolers or plastic tube type coolers do not work as effectively as aluminium coolers due to the heat dissipation with aluminium.

Now that you say that, I recall I had a carbon fiber cooling jacket on my cheetah. It worked perfectly and I'd do it again if it wasn't such a pain in the ass to make them. Now....I think your just not getting it here. Since you really have no proof if your idea works better than mine, nor do I have any proof either...I'd like to throw this theory of mine out at you. Say you have an all aluminum heatsink like more component do.... (it's cheaper, quicker and easier to make too btw) well that all aluminum component heats up. Yes yes, it dissipates the heat from it. But...where does that heat go? In a small, closed up in vented chamber. Then what happens? This heats up the air in that chamber and guess what follows? Heats up my batteries, wires, receiver, servo, bec, motor, and back upon itself, the esc. So that must be better, right? I'd think not. Now do it my way where the heat doesn't radiate off the component and the heat is carried out by an unlimited supply of an awesome cooling fluid...water. just like it's supposed to do. That's my theory and I'm pretty sure I'm really close to it. Now your idea would work much better in a buggy, car, truggy etc because you'll have constant air across it to carry the heat away. It's just in a boat sealed up hull, I don't want that heat build up. Make sense? And to add to it, your splitting hairs. I can guarantee the much added water capacity it's going to help a bit.

Honestly I'm not really interested in making aby of them. I would make you one since you asked, let me be honest with you tho, it's probably more than you'd want to spend on this but I'd do it for $55 shipped. It's about 3 hours worth of work to make one.

I'm gonna run it next weekend. I have a few more things to finish up on the boat and I ordered better batteries too.

I'm not either. Honestly I took offense to your comment because I put alot of work and time and thought into this thing that someone telling me it isn't going to work as well as your idea kinda sets me off. I'm sure you'd feel the same way. I apologize if I got carried away. I take pride in my work.

I can understand what Martin is getting at, although it's only the top plate that is carbon so it's prolly not gonna make a huge difference.
You could try using an aluminum top plate just to see if it makes any. Or laminate carbon plate over the aluminum top plate for the aesthetic.
Nice job tho Travis. Looks good

Travis, that looks awsome! I'm sure it's a huge improvement over the original. It would have been cool to run it in it's original form and take a temp reading then run the new one and see how much difference there is.

I can do that. Good idea! I'll leave the stock cooling block on it. Make some passes. Bring in. Check temp. Change block real quick. Try to duplicate my passes. Check temp again. That's the way I will do it.

Thanks! I don't think it'll make any noticeable difference tho. If I have any issues, I'll try it.

I like it and think it will work good ! I don't think the carbon will hurt anything as it's on the top side .

    Travis,
I don't think it's necessary to change the carbon plate to aluminum, but it would certainly increase heat transfer, albeit to a relatively small degree.
It's not an effect of dissipation via air though...I think you might be missing the point and perhaps Martin is too.

I'm not going to go further into an unsolicited explanation since you started a thread to show off what you made, not a thread to learn more about heat transfer.

Nice work on the part. It's always more impressive to see something made by hand than it is if it were just purchased from a hobby store, not to mention much more rewarding.
