Servo recommendations

I am new to RC Electric boat racing. Can anyone recommend a good waterproof servo for my recently acquired P-Spec Whiplash Hydro?

You can always waterproof your own servos.
But if you are lazy like me, You can always buy a Savox SW-0231MG.

Hitec used to be great for service too. They replaced them if you broke one. Not sure if that's still the case.

I like the waterproof Savox lately. Bit more torque available but a bit more pricey.

If you're going the Hitec route, for a few extra bucks I go with digital vs analog.

Please note that if the suggested HiTec uses the same case as my HS 5646WP: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...d=dh-hs-5646wp ,the measurement is slightly bigger than your run of the mill sdandard Futaba servo.
Length of a Futaba S3305 ( I use that ) is 39mm vs. the HiTec which is 41.8 mm, and CERTAIN servo mount would have to be modified to fit! I found out the hard way after I epoxied the mount. Hence the Futaba S3305.
I do agree HiTec is a great product.

Not that there is anything wrong with using a waterproof servo, I just have to wonder why people think it's needed, nothing else in the boat is waterproof unless you happen to be using a Spektrum Marine receiver. In my books if I end up with enough water in my boat to kill a servo I have much bigger problems to worry about.
My choice is to go with a better servo, like ball bearings, better gear train, higher torque etc over waterproof. Load the top end (gear train) full of white grease and a quick spray of CorrosionX on the control board good to go.

What is the difference between Air servos and Surface servos. My local hobby shop has only Air servos in stock, will they work in my boat?

Seems if you go online and order you can get anything you need. Things like a water proof servo or mr200 the prices are fixed the same everywhere with free shipping from the bigger places on e bay. I would imagine you look at the torque of the servo. Want metal gears and good bearings on a boat

Air servo's as in Avaiation servos I assume are the same standard spec servos as cars and boats.

I like to run a better servo then a standard 3 kg servo. I run Blubird servos which are metal geared, Ball raced and digital with spec's from 7kg to 10kg depending on the boat. I have got 2 Traxxas waterproof servos which OSE sells. They seem quite good and opted to run one in my Smash shark after loosing a servo due to some water getting on my servo and almost hit the rocks again at Boondal.

Don't assume that a "waterproof" servo really is. Club members have tried the blue varieties and several failed due to water intrusion. I prefer digital servos - metal gears optional - with at least 100 inch ounces of torque depending on the application. I open them and spray with CorrosionX, no problems. In twenty plus years of FE boating I've never stripped a servo gear set and most did not have metal gears....quality matters and most have been good quality HiTechs.

An an example was last weekend. My rigger crashed and the hatch collapsed letting in a bunch of water. I seldom get water in a boat but this was flooded. After thoroughly drying things out (opened the servo and mopped up a few drops) the servo works perfectly. Ditto the ICE200 which had been soaked in CorrosionX months ago. Maybe I was lucky but I am happy.
