Back again this year to Zamperini Field in Torrance, the WWII B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" is just dazzling.

Local hero Jim White , at age 20, flew 18 B-17 combat missions over Europe in 1945. ( if Army Air Corps pilots survived ten missions they could go home. Jim kept going until his B-17 crashed on takeoff on mission #18, killing two crew members). Truly an American Hero.

Protruding from the bubbles front, back, underneath and on top were devices used to discourage Luftwaffe fighters and their pilots from staying airborne

Bonus Question for Aviation History buffs : What marking on this plane indicates that it's Army Air Corps rather than U.S. Air Force ?

"What marking on this plane indicates that it's Army Air Corps"?
I'll take the white star in the blue circle for 100 Alex.
Did you know the 8th Army Air Corps suffered more casualties than the Marines did in the Pacific, AND Europe combined.
