    Default Simon's Balsa Rigger

After all the info I gathered from the Rigger design thread here it is.

    The LOA is 630mm
The sponsons are at 240mm inside to inside
Sponson to tub gap is 90mm
Sponsons are 15mm below the tub line.
    Cf booms
    Cf rudder and turn fin
    All hand made hardware.

    Will run a Superstock 23t (27krpm) motor
    0.62 wire drive
    531 or modded prop
    6 x IB4200 push the smoke about.

I am waiting on a mini servo and a few other small bits to complete the build.
Hatches are made and varnish is drying.

Well it is all finished now.
I took it for its first run yesterday and it was not alll as I had hoped for.
It ran very wet on the sponsons and was a little slower than my hydro.
Not fair as they both have the same motor/prop/cells combo.
I gave it a few little tweaks on the strut and it improved a little.
On the way home I was thinking ride pads, wings, more power......

I got it on the flat bench to check the strut settings and guess what we found?
I had set it excactly 5mm too deep on the strut, htf did that happen?
No wonder it was nose wet.
I am surprised that it even planed out.

I have reset the strut to give a better AoA on the sponson bottoms and will give it a whirl this morning.

    Completed pics to come.

    beautiful rig Simon
The Manx has been sitting dormant, but I think I finally have my motivation back. I hope to see it float soon.

At last I got it up and running……well !!
To my eye I am seeing 50km/h or 30mph

This is a total success. I designed, built and ran it !
    I win !

o.k so I am not about to come to the LA saws and take some records, but I am so happy that it works.

Someone asked for pics of it with hatches on and here they are, in the water too.
Here is a bit of a crap video of it running. I just set the camera on the tailgate of my truck and let it go.

    http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...t=P6260713.flv

There was a small problem as it hit something and that tore the rudder off.
Back home and a good session with the soldering iron got that sorted.
    Pics of damage and repair.

I can now see why riggers are the go for speed as this hull is now faster than my shovel style hydro and shows no signs of frontal lift or other bad behaviour that the hydro shows.

Given the design methods I use I believe that I am now ready to do a Canard type of hull.

There are other threads on this and I will post there soon.

    My rigger goes !!
    I am happy !!

I am holding off going the lipo and BL route at the moment. I like to see just what I can get from brushed cans because I know that some insane speeds have been achieved on "old technology ". If I can get some good pace with the old style gear then I will know that my design and setup are good.
I know that lipo and BL will give me more speed but to me they are only overcoming design issues. The old adage of give anything enough power and it will fly comes to mind here.

I have yet to try the 17t in this boat.
When I had it in the hydro it gave me all sorts of headaches regarding frontal lift.
In the Cat it was a blast, so I think in the rigger it should be good for a laugh.
I have room and enough CoB envelope to get another cell in there too.
    Let's see what happens.

btw. Wife has volunteered to come and shoot some vid soon.

I used a 6X2 in a SAW rigger and got it up to 52+ mph...
keep in mind it's ONLY and I mean ONLY 2 passes per time...
then it has to cool off.

Some more very successful runs today.
I began with a 531 which is a very nice prop for this motor. It went well !!
Then I threw on a 534, this had a slightly higher speed by eye but had a terrible hook-up time.
I then went to a 431 and it was amazing.
Out of the hole was near instant and this little rigger went like a greased weasel.

A few different online FE calcs and indeed my own prop formulae tell me that the 531 should be faster than the 431 but water time tells me different.

I believe that the 431 allows the motor to spin a little more freely and thus make up for the difference in pitch.

    Does this sound right ??

    Motor is 23t ( 27500 rpm )

    Default Bouy wins !!

I joined the bouy bashing club today.

Rigger vs. 20 litre container anchored to the bottom.
    Score = Bouy 1 , rigger damaged.

All is o.k as the damage is now repaired and it is ready to hit the water tomorrow.

    Thanks for the compliment ED.
I will get run up a set of sketches similar to the Canard ones. What you did with those was very good and I hope to see at least one hull built by someone.
It will take me few days to get the sketches together for you.

You will notice earlier that ED has offered to draw up a set of plans for this one.
I don't realy draw plans myself but work from a set of hand drawn pencil sketches. ED did a fantastic job with the information that I sent him for my Canard.

To get you started it may help to look at the plans for the Predator. Mine is loosly based on this design using the basic overall proportions and critical angles.
I can send you a copy of the Predator plans if you want.
Just send me an e-mail and I'll reply with the plans.

Of interest, will this be your first boat ??

    Simon's, got the sketche!
something worries me... the bottom of the sponsons are parallel to the water? no angle?
8° angle of attack to the sponsons seems a lot to me?

It is now sporting the new 8S Fiegao and a 100A speedy from Steven.
Running a 6 pack of IB4200's and a 431 prop this thing is insane.
At wot it is well out of shape.
The rear is very very loose and I suspect the massive increase in power is the cause.
It appears that it rides up on the prop a lot higher and this in turn makes the tail very loose.
I have observed my semi-shovel hydro do this with a 531 instead of the 431, the tail gets well up and pushes the nose in a little for a wild ride.
Once backed off to the 431 it is very nice.
    Back to the rigger.
I can see some possible solutions.
    1. Move CoB back an inch or 2 from the sponson rear
    2. Raise the strut to loosen up the front even more.
    3. Run at less than wot...............not as much fun though.

    Suggestions please.

btw it is really moving now, I would estimate 60 km/h +

I am on the road to getting this sorted.
I commited the cardinal sin of adjustments. I did two at once.
I raised the strut to loosen the front up AND used a 6 pack that I know has less punch.
It was a lot more controlable.
I am now learning to tune this hull for the BL power that I now have.
Lots more time on the pond to come while I get this one stable at speed.

On a similar note I did raise the strut on the Hydro too and the it now wants to blow over, a bit more down and I think I will find the sweet spot.

If my "blog" or diary of developments is proving tiresome or boring please say so, otherwise I will continue to chronicle the developments of my favourite hulls.

Simon, it is not tiresome. I know that there are several of us that have no problem watching progress in action. Plus I have enjoyed seeing the builds all the way through to running.
