Pro Boat and Spectrum surface transmitter compatibility?

Why are ProBoat (rebadged Spektrum) only compatible with Spektrum marine receivers? I have used air receivers in my boats, but want to switch to a 2.4 transmitter, but don't want to have to replace all my receivers.
