    Default 8XL with stock ESC

    hello gents

seems my motor needs to be replaced... i ve noticed a few people run an 8XL with hydra 120 ESCs... would the 8XL work out with the stock ESC ??? my educated guess says yes since it s about a 2100 kv motor... i can run an ammo (2300kv) with the stock ESC so the 8XL should be ok then ?? sound reasonable ??? please inform the misguided aussie...

noticable speed increase ?? maybe a couple of mph ??? i d eventually like to upgrade to a better ESC but for now i ll need to stick with the chinese maded aquacraft stuff...

    cheers

    Default 8xl

I don't think you can run a 8xl with the stock esc even with a tiny prop. Doby has a 9xl in his with the stock esc and seems like it worked great for him. I'm unsure about the ammo even unless you run a small prop and either way you won't have any headroom which is a good idea. If your sticking to the stock esc for a while I would search for doby's boat with the 9xl as an upgrade. My .02 .

The 8xl will out amp a stock sv esc. It may be possible to run a small enough prop to get away with it, but what fun is that.

Mine takes a 9XL with no problems at all, going on 2 years in one boat.
Put a 9XL in it and you WILL notice a major speed increase. It also gives more flexability in props.

I totally cremated a stock SV speed control with an Ammo 2300 on my TS-2. [The OB lower unit does cause a higher current draw however.] Beware !

comfy numb - I don't think it's a problem of it not working (and that's not what the others that have given input have stated either), it's a matter of will it last for more than one run...
What I'm reading (and what I've experienced) is the amp load on the stock ESC is near the limit with the 8XL...likely over the limit with even a 642 IME (running an 8XL in a slightly bigger hull). The extra pitch of the 642 is enough to spike your amps over the ESC's limit, especially in a mono.

KV is the only way I know to tell Feiago's apart, is it etched on the motor? perhaps on the front cap which is obscured by the motor mount? if not, I'm not sure how to tell without some testing gear.

PS - I like the CF mods and the blingy blue locknuts...the stringers are CF too? wanna sell me some? show us some more!

    cheers,
    -Corey

Average amp calculations for a mono hull using a 8XL motor on 4s:

    X432 - 44 amps
    X435 - 63 amps
    X437- 80 amps
    X637 - 96 amps
    X440 - 95 amps
    X640 - 120 amps
    X642 - 140 amps

    Default There you have it...

That's great info Reddy...maybe you should post it in the reliable BL thread too.
is that data gotten from FE calc, or your own data gathering?
Do you have similar data for other props/motors?

I used FeCalc for those numbers. It will give good ballpark figures for 2 pole motor setups. Still a great tool to get an idea about which prop to start testing with. It does not work as well for 4 and 6 pole motors.

Wow I didnt think an the stock esc could handle the an 8 or a 9XL,just because of the physical mass of the motor pulling more amps

Right, the largest prop to use safely for an 8XL with a 45 amp SV controller is a X432 prop and for a 9XL its a X435. These props are not big enough for the SV hull. Needs a bigger controller for these 2-pole motors.

It will be around 75 amps on 4s and under 40mph.

I have heard of people using 6s with BEC on the blackjack esc and now you are using 75 amps on the SV esc? Is anyone else doing this or is it going to fry?

What kind of speed are you seeing with this setup and why did you change from the SV motor?

    why - because i can

as for speed differences, i d say 5mph max... def'n increase in torque... you have to be a little less trigger happy with the throttle or she ll just prop stand and flip...
