Seven NEW NAMBA FE SAW Records set this weekend

What a weekend for FE !! The first NAMBA straightlines of the year at Legg Lake were just fantastic for us FE's. Virtually every electric racer there set records, or should I say SMASHED the previous numbers. All five SoCal FE members in attendance put records in the book

Highlights :

Mark F and his FCR CF twin cat : Q Offshore : 102.041.mph. Mark got some major air on his attempts, but after some air dam additions got two back-to-back runs in for the record.

Boyd came ready for blood with a bevy of Cats, including a beautiful twin HPR 135. He upped the P-Offshore record to a respectible 85.58 mph. The winds got the best of many of his attempts, but "He'll be Back !"

Brian went 103.3 mph in N-2 Hydro [fast pass of 103.615]- thats on two cells !!! After an encounter with a Legg spectator turtle, all that was left of his boat was a single sponson-(I'm sure Brian will be cloning the rest of the boat from what was left.)

Darin pumped up N-1 (I forgot which boat class-apologies Darin) of 40.61 ( I'm a little unsure if I got this right-Darin?)

Kevin went 105.932 mph in T-Offshore with the most amazingly constructed HPR135. His first ever SAW race & pass.

After three days of waiting for the wind to recede, I reclaimed my LSO [P-Ltd. Offshore] record at 67.771 mph with a fast pass of 71.xxx mph with my spec-powered Drifter S.

Finally the BIG ONE - Tyler set the Q-Hydro record at a blistering 122.884 mph - the fastest Q-Hydro official record in the country. WAY TO GO, T !!!!!!

The sportsmanship exhibited between the racers, gas, nitro, and FE was heartwarming. Brian and I have been trading the LSO record back and forth since 2005 (with Jim Vaughn {Jevmax} in there for a few years) . Brian was totally in my corner, along with Darin, to get the LSO prize. Brian actually GAVE me his LSO record prop to help me along and was gracious when I got the record back.

Brian was going for the P-OPC record as the sun was setting and I left before his results were in. No doubt he upped his record & Darin still had some tricks up his sleeve. Thanks to Mark Grim and the Amigos for a great event. Vids to follow- I'm getting horizontal after three sunup - to -sundown days of great racing.

71 out of a spec motor on 4s?? that is incredible. What kind of amps were u drawing? I know you probably wont let this out but will you share what the record breaking prop began its life as?? I know it's not a stock production prop but I'm thinking it started as one.

I'm about 17 mph off of your record. But with the pitch guage i just picked up from salir i hope to start getting into some cupping and adding pitch in and all that good stuff. Figure I'll ruin some props along the way, but that is just the learning curve right?

The prop was stock, nicely sharpened but after I broke a shaft & the prop hit the rudder, Brian straightened it out and may have tweaked it a bit. My motor & speedy never got hot ; no data logging to read out amps so your guess is as good as mine.

Tony is now very much a SAW vetran... He knows that this is a closely guarded bit of tuning advice, that, in the average boater's hands, will simply burn stuff up. I'm pretty sure he's not going to tell...

i know its a 30 sec prop at best and i know he isn't going to tell but, he wasn't gonna say if i didn't ask either so i figured it was worth a shot. I thought you had to list motor and prop when you broke a record? I guess i was mistaken. Plus i know how to get stuff out of Tony, you just need some donuts, a bag of m&m's and a burger or something and all the secrets start flyin.

There is space for "Prop Brand" and "Prop Size" on the record form, but all you have to do is put "Octura" or Prather" or "ABC" and "50mm" or leave the size blank. As for SAW record props, not many are bone stock anyway so knowing what they started as isn't a lot of help - diameter, shape and pitch will change......

Mike, It's not so much that I'm trying to keep a "prop secret" from you, but rather to show respect for Brian who handed me His prop in a genuinely altruistic gesture of major sportsmanship - which is an integral part of what's built in to the heart of SAW competition. Consider the fact that to constantly push the speed envelope ever upwards takes enormous effort; trial, test, trial, more testing, and waiting...waiting..waiting... for wind and water to be "just right." [ I waited EIGHT hours Sunday before I ever got my Drifter wet] Driving the right line, getting in and out of the lights at the right time, and spending more and more on equipment and replacement gear is just part of it. Witnessing Darin making infinitely tiny adjustments to electronics, props, and running gear was like watching a highly focused scientist in an engineering lab. Darin had more formulas and equations on his table than I had in my last two algebra classes. Watching the racers sitting and analyzing run data on laptops and thinking, thinking and making small adjustments on their boats was a display of intense creative excellence. Getting the right combination of elements is an excercise of major, extreme skill with a reasonable bit of luck thrown in - as in the unfortunate luck Brian experienced when his amazing 103+ mph 2-cell Hydro became contiguous in space and time with a curious turtle (Brian's boat sank out of sight leaving behind a single sponson). Brian, with his cherubic smile actually took this in stride - He knows the risks as we all have to.

For me (and I truly hope not to offend anyone), protecting one's go-fast stuff is more a matter of saying " We busted our a** getting these results, and we'd genuinely wish that anyone that wants to find out what that's like "come on down" to a race and give it a shot rather than just saying "Here's the setup I used-go do the same". You'll get all the help and encouragement you need which is way more than just finding the right prop. Mike, I know that you just got that cool prop guage, but for me the art of prop bending is something that eludes me and I'll leave it to the experts like Brian and Darin. I also know with knowingness that the prop is just one of many variables that contribute to the overall results.

Please keep the Donuts and M&M's coming and I'll see you at the lake. If you have a boat that my prop is correct for, you can try it out.

I understand there isn't a magic formula. And I really didn't expect you to spill the beans, but I still had to ask. Yep I got a neat prop guage on the way and 8 props I can start tweaking on. You can count on seeing me at the lake. Just spent 400 this week on batts motors servos escs. I know it costs to be competitive. I sank a 150 rescue boat fooling around. I know the frustrations. I get the weird stares when I make two passes only to pull the boat back off and adjust things for 10 min. You have always been as helpful as possible.

Brian called today to check in..
His comments were a fantastic time by all.

He went on to say how impressed he was “again” as to how much power the new Grimracer speed packs were making. Im not going to shove amp numbers out there, I will leave that for him but it had to take a special setup to run over 100mph on 2S. From the prop to the battery pack to the man wheeling the boat..

Just under 7 Volts to run over 100mph.. that is INSANE!

The whole "share your prop info and specs" argument is going on over on Jim's RC Boat Dock as well. Why do guys expect people to just divulge information that they worked hard to discover. If the prop didn't belong to Tony, I don't think it's for him to share it with you period anyway. The rightful owner of the prop could chime in if he desires.. I don't see Stewart/Haas, Hendrick, Roush or Gibbs sharing their setups and secrets with the rest of the garage on Monday? The prop he used was...are you ready for this...the one he had on his boat the time he set the record!

Congrats guys on all of these awesome records. It's amazing to see the advancements made in Gas and Electric boating. Pretty awesome!!



And btw.. My comments are directed in general at those who question people's props and exact details - not directed at any one person in particular. I just don't understand where they get the idea someone HAS to share info with them...

@ts davis you are going to have to wait in line, he is already building me a replica of his record breaking saw boat. He is going to stay up late for the next month calculating the perfect pitch angles for a prop he is casting specially for the build. He expects it to beat his current record by at least 5mph. He is a real nice guy, all i did was ask him what prop he was running and he just went ahead and took on this build project for me. Can't thank him enough.

Although, I really would like to see pictures of all of these. Achieving that kind of speed is a mix of science, art, perfect conditions and a helping of luck...........did I just read that somewhere....

I so wish I could get to these events. Not because I think I can be that fast too. These guys have a level commitment I do not posses. Brian sets a record and then the boat disintegrates. ugh I'd lose my mind. I sure would like to go and study. Learn how really really fast is achieved. Those skills do translate to heat racing.

Tony, you said it perfectly. Brain and I had many conversations over my melted connectors, poor cooling setups and the lousy props I was using......change, run, fail, change, run, fail, change, run, break a record

However, the most encouraging thing I heard all weekend (and it was a disastrous weekend for me to be sure) was from Brian "you've come a long way Grasshopper, stay with it".

If you want the answers to the setups, come down and join the hunt and get your boat wet $$$$$

Well said. Some things just don't translate well on forums. SAW setup information included. And it's not to be rude, condescending or secretive. Any of the recordholders could write 5 pages worth of information about their setups, in detail, but that's just not the way it works. You have to go there and see it for yourself. Rub shoulders with these guys. Start small and work your way up. Plan on losing equipment.

All of the information one seeks will be shared...just not in the manner some think it should be.
