in my traxxas spartan i just put in a leopard 1550kv motor with maching water jacket and a hobbywing 180 esc. it flys for a second then slows down..

what could be causing it.. also when programming the esc what should the timing be at also the cutoff.

Thats prob. the issue right there. You cells can only provide 108 amps of continuous current. So, you're hitting the LVC under load.

What you NEED is better lipos. At least 30c continuous.

Turnigy nano tech 5000mah 45C (one possible choice)

Here is my experience with settings on the t180.

Are you using a programming card, or your Tx to program.

Setting #1 (Running Mode) can be set to 1 for forward only, or 2 for forward and reverse. I recommend 1, forward only, because the spartan sits low in the water and water washes up over the back end if reversing.

Setting #2 (Lipo Cells) Factory default is #1 auto calculate - Set this to #6 - 6 cells. auto calculate can err and set the ESC for the wrong voltage.

Setting #3 (Low Voltage Cutoff) Set this to #4 - 3.2v or #5 - 3.4V. I find on my T180 (all three of them) that 3.4 volt cuts out too soon leaving 30-40% capacity left in my batteries. 3.2v cuts out a bit late leaving only 15-20% capacity left in the batteries (ideally you don't want to go below 20%) You will have to see which setting works best for you.

Setting #4 (Timing) I have run my Leopard 3674 1700kv motors and my Leopard 4082 1500kv motor anywhere between 0* and 15* timing advance and notice very little, if any, difference in performance. Both these motors are wye (Y) wind motors

I don't know if the 4082 1550 is a wye (Y) wind or delta (D) wind motor. It is generally recommended to run delta (D) wind motors at lower timing advances because they don't benefit much from timing advance and are more prone to overheating if advanced too much. (general rule of thumb, this can vary manufacture to manufacture)

If you are not able to confirm the wind type of the motor, then set your timing advance at 0* or 3.75* to be safe. If you confirm it is a wye (Y) wind motor you can go as high as 15* without worry, and possibly higher, but I haven't tried higher advances and therefore can't provide any recommendation based on experience.
