Default WTB: 2mm Stainless Steel Wire for Drive

I can't seem to find it anywhere. My LHS has piano wire only.

I need this for my MHZ Mystic C5000 M, and I've never done anything with wire drives before so I'm clueless

    Did you try McMaster.com?

They have three different pieces of 2mm stainless rounds 1 meter long.

304 is product number 1272T11 and $3.18 each. Diameter tolerance is +0/-.025mm, but that shouldn't be too critical for a wire drive, would it?

    another one for McMastercarr.com
Is it a straight shaft or does it actually need to bend?

You can get really good 2mm SS wire from the bicycle guys. Google 14 gauge ss bicycle spokes.

Thanks! The McMaster wire looks good. It will need to bend a little I believe.

Also, what size Teflon liner and stuffing tube will I need?

    I appreciate the help :)

If you need it threaded on the end I can send you a few spokes.

Dom, are you sure that 2mm wire will be ok on a 44" boat?

I don't think I need it threaded since I have the scale drives. The shafts are for 2mm wire, you just have to glue the wire in there with loctite.

I hope it'll be alright, that's what MHZ recommends. The scale drives I purchased for the mystic from MHZ have the 2mm drive shafts on them, so I'm guessing they'll work.

Hmm, not sure. I haven't started the build yet since it's my Christmas present didn't make any measurements yet. Probably like 10-12" though. And I'm only guessing.

I have a pile of 258mm spokes, so with the threads and j-bends cut off that would give you about 10" exactly.

OK I was just wondering. I am not used to the bigger builds. If MHZ recommends it I'm sure it will be fine.

Thanks j.m. :) I'll let you know if I decide to go with those, gotta do a bit more research first.

I sure hope MHZ is right, haha. Will the wire from McMaster allow a slight bend?

And can some please let me know the size of the Teflon and stuffing tubing I will need? :)

I didn't use a teflon liner on my 2mm (which is .078) wire drive just a good ole 3/32 brass tube. Never had any trouble and never leaked a drop. I'm not a fan of liners and wire to brass tube has less friction than a teflon liner.

I wanted to, but all of the ones on OSE have the prop shaft on the end which I don't need. If I contact him can he sell me just the wire?

Yeah I couldn't decide whether or not to use teflon liner. If I'm going to have a slight bend, wouldn't it be better to have the teflon liner? Otherwise the wire will rub against the brass, am I right?

Brass will have less friction than teflon. Either way will work fine I just hate messing with the liners.

I agree! To each his own....I am still divided on it. I think the smaller boats are better with the liner....bigger without IMO.........

Gotcha. I got used to the liners, that's why I asked, haha. Alright so 3/32 brass stuffing tube is what I will get. Thanks for the info!

What do I need to oil/grease it with? And is there anything else I need to do to run it properly?

I use grease no matter what, but I also have been using good 'ol 3n1 oil to add to the grease...just grease it and drizzle oil down it and slip it in........good to go bro!

Sounds good! I have that Grim Racer grease, so I'll use that and then I'll get some 3n1 as well. Thanks for all of the info! Hopefully Jeff will respond and provide me with some wire :)

Where can I find 3/32 stuffing tube?

You can get the brass through Steven (here).

Jeff is pretty darn good at getting back to me....just give him a little while....
