10ga wire w/ 6mm gold bullets/ thunder power 3s question

I just orderd my wire and bullets from OSE and got the 10 gauge wire with 6mm gold bullets. I also had an amazon gift card to use and found some thunderpower 3s 5400 25c hard case packs, so i ordered 2 of them. These will be my main boat packs. I'm wondering about just taking off the deans plugs and soldering on the 6mm bullets? Good idea right? Or not? I ordered 18 pairs of bullets and was gonna do all the connections with them (should have a couple spares).
Also, if the packs have 6mm bullets, could I make a short traxxas plug to 6mm bullet 1" or so wire to run these in my slash or slash 4x4? The 6mm bullets should cause no resistance bottle-neck or any other probs there right? I was going to do 12 ga wire, but I'm mounting my ESC pretty far from the batts and wanted less resistance...???

The short answer... YES, you can use the 6mm bullets on your packs... That's what I use as well.

Make sure you put the female socket on the positive side of the pack, and do NOT let the two leads contact each other. Dead shorting lipos will ruin them. Just do one side at a time and keep the other insulated while you are doing it.

Cool, figured it was fine but just wanted to be safe. Is there any trick to soldering bullet connectors? If so, any good walk-throughs you know of with pics? Thanks!

use flux, pretty easy then. jus sucks the soder strait in

One thing to keep in mind is the wire thickness. With a bigger gage wire it draws heat away fast, so you might want to invest in a pretty powerful gun.....Mine is a 230w from sears. Just did some 6mm's on some 8awg wire and it was challenging....lol

60 watt IRON, not gun works just fine on 8mm bullets and 8 ga. wire.

I was able to use a 40W iron, but it took a LONG time, and the entire wire got really hot as it conducted away the heat from the soldering point. Later, I needed to solder two 10g wires together for the ESC (the hydra 240ESC has two sets of 10g wires in //), and the 40W iron didn't phase it-- I bought a Weller 140/100 W gun (couldn't find a 250W gun), and that worked great. The higher power gun puts more energy into the wire at a faster rate (temperature is still about the same at the solder point), and the rest of the wire ends up actually staying cooler.

Tip, be sure to tin the wire leads first!

I read a post where somebody drilled out a little hole in a piece of wood and set the bullet connecter in it to hold it-- I thought that was a nifty idea and will try it next time.

I got the Etti 150 opto, so I also got the sport BEC. The specs for the 150 opto mention low-volt, so do I need a seperate LVC device?

Is 12 Gauge safe to use for a setup with 2x 22.2v 6s lipos in parallel running a feigao 580?

The bigger the better. On most newer high C lipos the standard seems to be 8 ga wire. If you have 10 ga available use it where possible over the 12 ga. Smaller wire has more resistance per foot and less capacity as well. But there are certain places you cannot change things. Motor wires/ speedo wires and such.

My portable solder board, 6 years old and still going strong, crystallized masking tape and all. top holes are 6.5 mm bottom set are 6mm. it also works for 5.5mm.

2 1/4 ply squares are washed in anti flam fluid. Attached to a 2x3 work surface.


@the comment on the new batts and 8 guage wire, i contacted one of the companies a while ago and asked why the tabs werent heavier but the wire was as it makes no sense, no replies. Anyone think about this or just not an issue?

Hobby King sells em. Looked on their site last night and looks like they are using bigger wire and connectors now. When I bought them it had 12awg wire with 4mm bullets for a battery rated at 200a continous....At lest they are learning.

Turnigy have got it right with their larger & higher C rating packs. Big 8 guage wires & 5.5mm bullets. Installed the correct way too, (for my setups that is) male on negative & female on positive. That's the way I've always done it.
