Slash 2WD vs. 4WD

Looking for a fun truck for my son that can plow through grassy park type terrain. Slash looks to be the right truck-- how's the 2WD version vs. 4WD? 2WD is a lot less expensive...

I was thinking start with the 2WD version with the cheap radio-- I'll be using a Spektrum on that anyway-- and when the brushed motor burns out I could convert it to brushless.

Or should I really hold out for the 4WD version? I know there is a platinum edition without the radio but it is a little pricy...

4wd! Brushless plus comes with 2.4ghz rado. The advantage of 4wd is worth it alone. I have one and I love it!

I'm sure the 4WD is better/faster, but I'd rather save the $$-- what I really want to know is would the 2WD version do well on grassy park type terrain. If 2WD only works well on street/dirt then it might not work out for me.

problem with grass is there is a lot of extra drag. Especially long grass. If it is like golf course grass then would probably be ok. BUT, I agree with the 4wd motion here, you will not be sorry. I would say that everybody that had a 2wd probably got a 4wd, but doubt that many who got the 4wd ever will get a 2wd. the difference is probably an order of magnitude better handling, since it is pushing AND pulling its way through the stuff.

I have two Rustlers and a Stampede, all 2wd, and the one thing I notice is that they tend to spin out a lot (oversteer)... I'm thinking of getting myself a 4wd next time.

I like the 2 wheel drive for simplicity. I'm trying to get my sons to have interest in fixing their own trucks. I didn't want to over complicate things, so I went with 2wd.

I just got my boys the Platinum 4X4 and it's a heck of a truck. They also have a friend with the 4X2 that just put the brushless motor in it, and that thing runs good, too, but the 4X4 out-accelerates and out-handles the 4x2 model.

Both trucks are impressively tough. Just make sure you lock-tite in all the screws/bolts. I've lost a handful already, but Traxxis mailed me a ton of them for free. They didn't locktite them in.

heck you can get a good 2wd used for 125 shipped over at rctech, and if you dont like it i bet you could get your money out of it.

2wd is fine but I predict you will go to brushless quick. I own two of each and like them equally. If it is money you want to save then go 2wd, but don't forget to figure about $130 soon if you go brushless. I say $130 because that is what you can get the vxl system for from ebay.

Thanks for the great info! I'm thinking hard about the 4x4 now...

I have a spektrum radio on order for another boat, and it comes with an extra receivier, so I was planning on using that radio/receiver in the Slash. So I guess I need to decide if I should go with the Platinum model (sans Radio/receiver) or the 4x4 combo kit.

My other boat is a ProBoat Fastech, and it has an AM radio-- Maybe I can use the Slash radio to replace the Proboat radio-- would the Slash radio/receiver work well for boating applications? (I'm not planning on using the Spektrum with the Proboat-- I need 2 boats with 2 radios...)

I bought my 4x4 on ebay. Used but like new. Not even a scratch. Minus tx/rx with all the little goodies it comes with, center diff and the upgraded shocks from the platinum for 300 shipped. You can find great deals on them on the bay!

Do yourself a favor and go with the rtr 4x4. The Platinum has had many issues that the metal hubs and such really emphasize as far as bearing slop, twisting axles, motor bearing failure, extra stress on parts, etc. I have both and finally went and got a Jammin SCRT10, now I'm buying another one of them. The Slash 4x4 rtr is a good truck for the money and really can't be beat as a basher. You will be much happier with the 4x4 than the 2wd. Just my 2 cents.

I settled on the 2WD brushed version-- after chewing on it I took Steve's advice-- simplier design, plus a whole lot cheaper. The brushed motor on NIMH is plenty fast for my son-- any faster and I'd be dailing back the throttle trim for where we are running it.

The truck runs for 20+ min on a single 3000mah pack... man, do we have to throw a lot of power into the boats to push them thru the water...

another thing to is, try the Slash on lipo...
really can wake up the brushed motor when your son is ready for it

I'll second that... Even a GOOD set of your Boating NiMH will too...

I threw in an old set of GP3300s in my Stampede once, after running around on 3000mah sport packs for a year, and HOLY COW!

Lipos are even better. Just make sure the ESC has a V-cutoff...

You can get some brand new roller 4x4 slashes off ebay for cheap. Then throw in the motor/esc combo u want and u have a 4x4 slash for under 300 depending on what
motor/esc u want. I think its about 110$ for the mamba sc combo.
