So due to covid19 lockdown, I have time for this build. It is the GP 310 from ML Boatworks. It starts with a bundle of wood parts!

Now try and figure out how they go together. Actually it didn't take to long and was easier than it first seemed. First I glued together the pieces that were doubled, side frames inner and outer, main bulkhead and top stringers.

Next was putting together the tub framing and sponsons. This was quite quick as when everything was slotted together a drop of CA around each joint and they were in one piece ready for the next bit. The tub was clamped and weighted to a board at each stage as it was glued to the bottom sheet and sides glued on.

Sealed inside with thinned epoxy and then glassed. Finally foam added for floatation (just in case!)

Tub has had two layers of C/F in the floor, sponson tops are sheeted and ready to join the tub and sponsons together.

Power in this will be a TP4050 2100kv. ATM I only have a Turnigy 150A esc (same as OSE Raider) spare, but will give it a cap bank and I think it will do. To be fair there is no class currently racing for this. I am building it for me, but hopefully can inspire others to build up P hydros for some racing. I have a speedmaster mini rudder and an aquacraft turnfin (which will do for now). An order from OSE is in transit (will take at least another week to NZ, it's still bouncing around USPS facilities in the US), that has a cooling jacket, servo, servo mount and strut. I will do the motor mount, stuffing tube, drill for hardware and any other things I can until these arrive. That may include painting yet.
Awesome work Peter. I'm in NZ (Christchurch) aswell and I'm also waiting on parts from OSE that I bought just before Lockdown started. Looking forward to the rest of this build.
Things have progressed. I actually painted it, wasn't happy with it and have sanded and am prepping for painting again. Have to wait until next week before i can order more paint though.
But here are some pics up to the painting stage. Still waiting on parts from OSE, they left the US on April 11. Stupid lockdown!!

Paint is on. I will give it a week or so to harden before I attack the vinyl etc on it. Still waiting for parts. Apparently NZ Post has huge piles pf packages stacked up, annoying but have to wait, amybe I will see them this week.

Well I finally was able to get enough bits together to finish the boat. It has a flat bottom strut on it atm as the parts ordered from OSE in April haven't turned up yet, I think they are still in a warehouse in Jamaica NY as that is as far a s the tracking got to.
So Saturday afternoon it got wet. Unfortunately due to an insufficient turn fin and needing a lot of rudder it didn't turn enough and ended up in the bank. That shouldn't have been any more worry than wash off some mud, but...some a$$hole has dumped a bunch of large stones there. The clatter sound it made was gutting. Mostly just superficial damage but it sucks to have wrecked the paint and it is a major to sand back the paint and redo it...so a bit gutted on that.

Anyway I still gave it three runs. Tried it on a P220, M447 and M445. On the bigger props it was real flighty, even after adjusting the strut and changing the turn fin. Don't kites need string on them was one comment! It was running fast but not stable with a lot of sponson walking and if it got air then...up and over it went.
The first turn fin I was using was an Aquacraft one. I ran the same fin on my whip 20 and it worked fine, but on this boat it needed a huge amount of rudder and it would flex and whip the boat coming out of the turn. I put on a straight large mono turn fin that had been cut down and canted it over a few degrees. This works way better and holds the turns well. I will make a couple of similar ones from 1.6mm spring steel as this one is 3mm thick.
With the m445 I was able to do 6 laps without the boat handling badly, so at around the 50mph mark. It seems better running a bit slower than faster so far. I am wondering if the motor size is overkill and I should change it to a P-Ltd size. I have a TP 5630 1500 kv and a SSS3660 2070 kv I could try.
@Paul, you reckoned this is a good rough water boat, not really at speed so far. Maybe it needs a round bottom strut also. Any ideas for improvement?
Peter, I just read your post. On the website, it does state round bottom strut. Flat bottom struts do not work. I also am seeing a lot of turn fins you have tried that I would say are not good choices. I would stick with the Kevin Macomb fin that Mojo Racing sells, or a Virginia Craftsman fin. Those are the only two I trust. I would also try an X445 or 447, detongued, sharpened balanced, tip cupped. The GP lineup has always run well, and in rough water too. It currently holds the 2 lap record in oval trim for nitro, so I know it moves out. I think right now, you are just needing some tuning done. Also, have you scuffed the sponson bottoms? If they are still gloss paint, that will cause handling issues, and scrub speed. Another thing to do, is cut down your rudder probably 1" shorter. it should only be about 1" to 1.25" deeper than the prop at its deepest point. I hope this helps. Mike, ML Boatworks

Ok so after the strut change and a new turn fin, I made one from springsteel (being a springmaker can be useful), I got a run in on Saturday. We were doing two lap sprints, and with an M445 it was running great. I did a time about 1.5 secs under the one I set with my whip 20, however the water was very rough for a boat this size with 3-4" chop on the left hand end of the oval and I had to button off a lot. The right hand end was calmer so wot for that end and it turned awesome at full speed and was stable. I can't wait to get it out again on flat water and try a 447 on it!
