I was wondering what the effect of 0 timing used on a wye motor? Why I ask is that when I asked TP motors about a motor I
had if it was a D or Y wind they said it was a D but there engineers say to use 0 on all there motors. Now I know when you increase the
timing on a d wind you create more heat with no gain but what happens when you run a wye wind on 0.
I've never understood why TP says that. I've heard other people report the same response from them. I run my TP Y wind motors on 11-15* timing depending on the ESC.
Years ago I asked Steve Neu what timing was best for Y and Delta winds. He told me 8*-15* was a good range for Y motors, and Delta motors liked 0-4.8*. Maybe he knows something about BL motors...
I suspect that some sources specify low timing thinking to protect their customers from overheating an over-propped motor. Since most of our motors were originally designed for planes - which usually have much lower amp draw - lower timing may work better for them. Too low timing in a high amp Y-powered boat will slow it down and overheat things.

That’s what I wondered about the y wind motors.
Today I tried increasing the timing from 0 to 12 degrees noticed a drop in motor temp from155 to 127 with the same prop.

I order it special and it wasn’t marked on the box if was a d or y wind and when I asked was told they recommend 0 timing on all their motors.
Ok with it being a custom wind from the factory, I would say with the results that you have found by raising the timing. it is a "Y" wind.

Newbie question: Concerning the wind of a motor, how can we identify the wind type? I have the ACE Ripper IBL40/20 2000KV motor and can't find any specs on the wind type. My end game is getting the timing set correctly in the Sea King 180A ESC I am using.

I don't know either. A 2y runs 2600+ kv. Too hot for P ovals in my opinion. I ordered something special for my new one too but not the 4060. I aint tell'n.Quote:
