Prop bore diameter !

Just asking if you go from a 3/16 bore prop octura and open it up to 1/4, in a saw type setup would it still be strong enough?
has anyone done this ?

I would think you would weaken the prop hub substantially, and introduce all sorts of balance issues.
0.187 flex is plenty strong, Especially the welded ones from Wholt RC.

very very hard material to cut,,,with what equipment I have ,,, I will not do it for customers I'have ruined a few props that way

If you just have to use 1/4” cable, get one with a steped-down stub shaft. I would NOT drill out a prop, especially for high rpm SAW-type running.

Did you put dog on the 3/16" stub? If so try it again and use a 1/4" dog. :wink:

Not quite sure what you mean ?
Using a 1/4 stub now will not go back to 3/16 stub with my setup.

I was going by your post #6. :confused2:

I have broken the stub off a step down cable using a 3/16"dog. If you decide to go with the cable Fluid linked to consider using a 1/4" dog. While it is still possible to break the stub off (although I haven't) it is less likely since you won't be removing material from the 3/16 portion of the stub for the flat for the dog.

Yea that looks like a good shaft, i don't like the one piece one's that are machined down the two pieces ones appear stronger no weak point.
might need to get smaller ID bearings In my drives to run these.

The problem i have is that when i just want to have some fun and run a smaller prop there is no prop in 1/4 , and i don't trust 3/16 dog Any more with the torque these motors have.....

Jay already told you no The hub would be to thin I don't suggest it at all what prop anyway ?

After all the advice from very experienced people, those who have tried and also from dasboata, the prop guru, it's not advisable to do it. . . then perhaps he needs to find out for himself and go ahead and do it. . .Maybe he will be successful and we can all learn something new!. . .It's like telling a driver not to go through a red light as you might get caught and get a ticket . . .even worse get into an accident. So the driver does it a couple of times and gets away with it, finally on the third time he goes through the red light he gets hit by another car. . .the results are devastating, not just a ticket but perhaps lives lost. I apologize for the very harsh analogy but same principle.. .take the advice and save yourself the trouble. I too have tried it with no success as I ruined the prop before I could even put it on and break it during use. ..

Using a 1/4 drive dog is a brilliant idea.
This puts all the stress on the outer diameter, and is not transferred through the step down.
I can't say for sure, but I'm willing to bet that the step down has a square corners at the step, which will lead to stress concentrations.
Going with the 1/4 drive dog eliminates all of that. That would be a much more robust setup.

I’ve been running like this for a number of years. I have not broke a shaft. I have run cut down 457’s on this setup and mangled a couple props due to debris in the water. No broken shafts.

What can you recommend in a two blade in a 1/4 Shaft ABC, and a little more aggressive then a Octura X57 ?

I don't know the specs on ABC props I don't have a chart on them my ESC was Luke warm with a X57 108 mph !

Here is the problem with the OSE shaft for me, mine is 5 1/2 inch before the flex OSE one is 4 inch.
It will not work with my drives :crying:

Mine , my bearings are at about 2 and 5 and it's 8mm thick shaft.
