Points Series
I no longer have a dog in the hunt but I agree totally with Scott regarding points races. You need to keep in mind that first and foremost, WFMBC is a membership club. Everything must be done for the general good of all memembers and everything done (except for emergency decisions like buying a new trolling motor battery, etc.) must be put to a vote by the membership present at the meeting. As an alternative to the points races during normal race days, make them on the 'off' weekends so the general 'just having fun' members are not aced out on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.
A long and well publicized "Nautical Extravaganza" wherein the public is invited to watch race boats, scale boats, sail boats on a given day with demonstrations, a 50/50 raffle, food concession, and parking to be a $3 per car donation. This ultimately could bring in more $$$ than any other event during the year. It also has the potential to sign up new members and promote a positive view of model boating by the general public. You would need to do a saturation advertising campaign. Start off by contacting sailing clubs and scale clubs (I think there are both in the St. Pete area) to enlist their participation. Contact the local newspapers about 3 weeks before and encourage them to send out a reporter to interview members, photograph their boats (scale, sail, race) and run an article. Encourage them to run the article more than once with the last one the week of the event. Send out flyers to clubs and to post in hobby shops. Park the spectators in the main parking lot with races going on at the usual course, scale boats along the north/south shoreline, and sailboats on the north end. Of course coordination of frequencies will be required. A couple of the little family walkie talkies can take care of that. There would need to be good signage pointing the spectators to the various venues, eg., racing, scale, sailing.
I certainly am not trying to meddle in the clubs affairs as I am no longer active. However, as one of the founders I wish it continued growth and success. From what I see so far, Scott is doing a terrific job!
See you all at the swap meet!Mini Cat Racing USA

Since you guys go to the lake twice a month, why not make the 2nd sunday of the month your general fun run day, and the 4th sunday your points day. You don't have to have a points race every time you go to the lake, but you shouldn't have to go back to the lake on the off weekends for points racing.Comment

It's kind of a 50/50 thing. Sometimes he beats me and sometimes I beat him. He did install a special "pretel drive" in it Sunday. The flex shaft tied itself in a knot during the 1st Q heat.Comment

Why are we re-hashing this ? We already voted on this from what I remember at yesterdays club meeting... It was $5 each and $1 each extra class, and everyone agreed...
2nd Sunday test and tune and fun runs, and the the 4th Sunday for club racing. We had this pretty much hammered out now its all up in the air ?Comment

No, about 3 people said something, everyone else didnt say anything which is why we are "re-hashing" this. We are a club, not 3 people. Things cant be forced down peoples throats and its kinda what happened yesterday. We need to make sure we dont force out the new guys and keep them, and others, coming. Besides, its very un-realistic, as I mentioned to you yesterday afternoon to think we can have all this ready to go in 2 weeks. Hell, we just got the sound system and PA working correctly for the first time yesterday. We would have a lot to do in 2 weeks to make it officially start on the 4th Sunday. We cant just dive into this. We all have a lot of figuring on whos doing what etc to make it happen, what roll each person is playing when racers are racing. EVERYONE needs to be involved.. spotters for each driver, someone logging info, running the sound and paying attention to call things out that are happening over the PA... basically Im saying, it would and should be operated nothing like what we have done.. at least that Ive seen w/ in our club. And if everyone isnt on board, I certainly am not going to foce it. I think Jim put it well, we are a membership club and everything should be done in the good general of all members. If we need to run a series to raise money from ourselves, then maybe we should discuss raising the club dues for our next fiscal year.Last edited by tiqueman; 01-09-2012, 01:29 PM.Comment
