When you change the speed controller out, if the motor runs backwards, swap any two of the motor leads to get it to rotate in the proper direction.

The one from radio shack should work. Make sure you have the polarity correct when installing.

Buying a good soldering iron would be a good investment. Especially when/if you want to solder connectors on batteries, etc. Here is a good page on tips and stuff.. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/info.php

my brother in laws did the same thing when he was on the stock radio. When he rolled it, it wouldn't run full out, but it would keep pulsing non stop. Luckily, his capacitor only bulged out the top, not blew. Went with spektrum DX3.0 like me, and not a single issue since.

I picked mine up at a local shop (Canada) for $250 CAD. It comes with 2 receivers. I use my other one in my e-maxx. Well worth every penny. There are cheaper, just as reliable 2.4 systems out there if you don't need the 2 receivers. Others will be able to chime in on what's out there for less money.

The major benefit is that the receiver as a failsafe built into it. When you bind the receiver to the transmitter, the servo position and throttle position at that point becomes your failsafe. If you roll it, just turn off your tx, and you're safe.

I think you'll have to use an x-acto knife and dig that one out.
