    Hydra 120 & Feigao 8XL

I would like to upgrade my supervee 27, i have read through the treads and have settled on a Castle Creations Hydra 120 esc and a Feigao 8XL motor, could you tell me if this is a good idea? i would like to run it to the max and was planning on running 2 x 11.1v 4550mah lipos to give 22.2v, again is this a good idea or are 2 xn7.4V lipos enough,

    cheers

running 6 cells on the Hydras - not a good idea
    stay with the 4 cells

    120 ESC and the 8XL - sure, I ran my 8XL on a Cuda 80 w/o cooling,
ranted it was a hydro but I think it can hold it's own. If you can afford a Hydra 240
it gives you some more headroom, that goes w/o saying.

    my 2 cents

I run the same motor and esc in my sv27. The esc and hull are pretty much maxed out in its ability to perform with this combo on 4s1p. Too many people have had bad luck with the Hydra series on 6s1p. Not to mention you will more than likely fry both the motor and esc on 6s1p. Spend a little more and get the 240 Hydra or look at this one . Either are highly recommended in my book. I think this combo will do best on a 4s platform.

I dont recommend the 8xl on 6s. I would run the 8xl & hydra 120 on 4s. People are running 45-55 mph with this setup.

Steve is right, the 8XL is a SAW-only setup on 6S - and the ESC will fry quickly. A 12XL or 13XL would be a better choice for 6S but.....

....6S and a powerful BL motor will grossly overpower the SV27. That is a small boat for what amounts to an oval racing setup. For example, most current successful 4S racing monos are around 33" long, and 6S monos are 36" and longer. Stick with 4S in the small boat.

Sorry about that. The link was to the etti race controller that Steve sells here on OSE.

                This should be it.

Now i am lost, the ETTI Race 150 Brushless ESC, has a better spec and a good looking water cooled system but is cheaper than the hydra 120, nomaly you get what you pay for, does any one rate one over the other to run the 8xl?

Steve just started to carry the Ettie's. You may have to inquire what his feed back is on them unless someone who is using one would chime in. I stick to the Castle products.

The etti's we carry are running great. The hydra's are a ton easier to program using the Castle Links. That's the main difference the customer sees besides any of the different specifications.

Hi Chief, listen to the good advice already given by UB-Hauled, tth, Steven, and Fluid. 6S on an 8XL will run at 46,000rpm, way too high for a mono - the motor, bearings, ESC, and/or a 6S1P Lipo can be destroyed in the process.

For a great 4S setup I'd recommend a 9XL-1853kv motor if you're intent on using a Hydra 120. If you're intent on running an 8XL then a Hydra 240 would give you a better margin as UB-hauled has pointed out. I've actually fried a Hydra 120 on an 8XL motor in a catamaran because you're limited in the size of the props that you can use.

Personally, I'd invest in the Hydra 240, this way you have the luxury of running a Neu motor later in a larger boat - gives you more versatility for the future.
