OK - as suggested by the collective, I'm using this as a learning experience
I've started by gluing in a balsa block and sanding it to the approximate shape of the sponson.
My question (apart from, did I screw up already?), is what kind of glass to use. I was about to go forward with glass mat, and it occurred to me the chopped glass may be better for sanding the sponson to the right shape.
Advice would be much appreciated.
