    Help me choose motor/esc for this boat

    Hello, I'm brand spankin' new in this hobby. Before I go ahead and shell bigger dollar amounts for quality stuff, I needed some practice, so I bought the 26 inch Deep-V IMPULSE boat from R2 Hobbies (link), which is cheap enough for me to experiment with and gain some knowledge and craftsmanship. Also it has the anti-turnover design, which is attractive to newbs like me.

    It comes with pre-installed rudder, shaft, propeller, and motor mount. All I need to do is add a motor, ESC, servo, receiver and battery.

    Knowing nothing about it, I am not sure how to select the motor and the ESC. My understanding is that if I have those two chosen, only then I can see what size battery I should fit in?

    Here are the parameters:

    Length of boat: about 26 inch, fiberglass (from what I heard, pretty thin);
    Weight without hardware: 430 grams (probably double that with everything installed?);
    Pre-installed prop: 34 x 25, although I'll go with a different size if it's going to make it any better.

    My goal is to have as fast as possible boat, without compromising stability way too much.

    Please help!

    Come on, nobody, not even a single view of my thread?

    So far, I've been looking at this combination:
    Motor: Leopard 2860 / 3400 Kv (max 80A, lipo 17v): http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...?prod=leo-2860
    ESC: Hobby Wing Seaking 90A (burst 180A): http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...ker-seaking-90

    Is this good? All I know is that the ESC should have higher than the max current from the motor, and also I need to have BEC in the ESC. These seem to fit the requirements. Is this going to be too much for this little 660mm boat?

      Post a pic of the hull, what motor mount does it include pre-installed? I'd prolly go with the stock AQU 4s setup on 2030kv motor, if it will fit, may can go with a set of 2s lipos, need to see photos..

          Here are some pics of the hull, it is 660mm x 190mm x 95mm (L x W x Height). Rudder length is 75mm. I have no idea what that motor mount is..."M5"?! I was planning to include a mount with my motor and ESC order from here (Offshoreelectrics), and if the one that comes with the hull doesn't fit, to just change it.

              I'm ok with that, as long as it is what will work and is better. How does it compare to the combo I listed above (with the Leopard motor and the Seaking ESC)?

                Is the wood motor mount already glued to the hull? I doubt you can bolt any of the motor on to that M5 mount. Also it is a self-righting hull, meaning you need to consider to set it up properly, the type of batteries you will use etc. On some of these hulls you need to put more weight on the port side, when the boat is stationary, it will list to the portside, only under power will the torque cancel out the lopsided weight on the portside. Meaning: you may not have room for a pair of 5000mah 2s ( assuming you want to run 4s) , and, you need to off set your battery(ies) .
                This is not a hull that you can just but the motor and ESC without considering all those other factors, I suggest you wait a bit for other people to chime in.
                Here is a picture of a RTR self-right boat, notice the battery stand is on the portside : http://www.nitrorcx.com/99b-10036-650-ep-artr.html
                another one:http://www.nitrorcx.com/99b-10004-620-ep-artr.html
                When set up well , you will have a blast, and never have to worry about flipping, because it self-rights. The hull has a flood chamber:http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...rod=TP-Syncron

                  You can run a 36xx motor, the 28xx motor is on the small side. As you might have realized, the motor mount will have to go probably, at the very least you have to come up with an adaptor so a normal motor with 25mm spaced mounting holes and M3 screws will be able to attach to the M5.
                  Doby's combo is good for a boat this size, but you need to consider the batteries, that combo will only run on 4s,( he did not see your pictures) , look at your wood stand carefully, the slots are on the portside, starboard side is for servo.
                  A boat this size sometimes is setup to run a single 3s on one side, I doubt you have room for a single 4s 5000mah battery. If you choose to run 3s then you need to choose your motor/ESC accordingly.
                  Suggestion: measure your battery stand , see how long it will hold a battery, also measure the depth at that location, look for a typical 4s/5000mah battery measure and you will begin to have an idea of what your next step will be. batteries with less than 5000mah will do too, although you will have less run time.

                  The above is only for your reference, batteries with the same capacity varies in their physical dimension, your best bet is to spend time to do some research.
                  just my $.02
                  Good Luck!

                    Hey Tlandauer, thank you very much for the detailed explanations! I really haven't thought about so many things that you cover in your posts, thank you!! I guess I'll wait for the hull to arrive, and then take it from there. I recently had to stop racing superbike motorcycles, and I thought I'll never get that excitement again, who would have known something so safe as RC boating can make me so excited that I'll have to put real efforts to be patient! :)

                    So yes, the hull should be in my hands hopefully by the end of next week, then I'll measure everything and see what will work and what not.

                      BTW, was too late ( or too early in the morning) , I am looking at the two elongated holes besides the center shaft hole on the motor mount, I guess it will accept 25mm spaced holes using M3 screws. Sorry about my mistake!

                        No worries, thanks again. I'll wait till I get it, and then I'll most probably post here again with exact measurements before I order everything.

                            In my opinion that boat runs horrible. Hopping out the water like that constantly made me stop the video. I dunno about you guys, but i like my boats to run smooth.

                              Unfortunately, I had the same feeling when I watched the video, just waited for someone to confirm. Well, the hull is shipped already, so I just have to see what I can do about it. Read somewhere that installing trim tabs, putting some weight towards the front, and (if possible) adjusting the prop angle down could help with such hopping... or maybe a different propeller....there is so much to learn and experiment with for sure. At this stage, I have to decide on motor and ESC. The guy in the video had 28mm motor, seems to be enough (power-wise)?
