whip sport 20 or the whip sport 40, which to buy!

Hello all, I am going to purchase either the whip 20 or the whip 40. Which hydro will I be happiest in the long run. Sport running only and would like flexibility for running from 4s to 6s. For you owners out there, which is the best overall choice if you were planning on getting one and only one hydro. Other brand recomendations welcome to. Its going to be q Christmas present to myself. please help me make a good choice. Thank-you, jeff

If you want to run 4s buy the 20, 6s the 40.
To be honest I don't understand why people say they want to run 4 and 6s on the same setup, big difference in voltage, why not choose one and optimize the boat for it.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

I really wasnt sure what was the best setup to run on either for sport. If the whip 40 is a great 6s boat then thats what I will run. I wouldnt be switching voltages once I make a decision as that would obviously involve prop and complete setup changes. I suppose I shouls have just said that I want to run 6s or under. I want to stay away from a HV setup as I have one of those on the go and I will be rich in batteries but very wallet poor once its done!
6s in the whip 40 sounds good, are there any other things good or bad that make one better than the other? Any modifications that are considered a must do or worthwhile for performance / looks. I saw a recent build where a Basswood buildup around the hatch area was done for ease of taping etc. I just want to make an informed purchase. Ideas seem to vary from build to build and I am hoping to get the good and the bad on both boats or even reasons why I should be looking at other kits.
Thanks for help, I will try to be a lot clearer in future when asking for help!

The Whip 40 or the ML Boatworks GP400 are both great Sport 40 hulls for 6S FE running. Club members have both and they are both very good. The ML is more scale-like. The ML is probably a bit better in rougher water and the Whip a bit faster on smooth water, but the difference is small and can be overcome with setup changes. The ML is a bit easier to tape up and has a bit more room. Hard to go wrong with either one.

I was looking at the ml boatworks products as I was considering a more scale build as well as looking at the gp hulls. The gp series stuff was resonably straight forward but when it came to the scale stuff I had trouble understanding what the kits came with. I should email ml boatworks to help me understand. I'm sure if your familiar with your boats it would be easier. Back to topick, I like the sound of more room and better in the rough.
Which kit in your opinion finishes out nicer, I am hoping if the build goes well to leave it in wood trim with just clearcoat, maybe a little mahogany in the top decking for contrast (or other wood recommended). I am not looking to break speed records so a nice finish would be great!

The whip 40 will require a little build up as you've already stated for taping the cowl. But it's not that big of a deal to do. I don't have a ML but have seen them and they do look easier on the taping. But as stated, not sure there's going to be much difference especially for sport running it's going to be more of which looks better to you. The whip is probably a little harder to build as well, the sponson skins are a challenge. BUT it's also a very proven hull and when I can keep mine running it's right at the 70mph mark.

What water you run in will also help decide, rougher would better suit a bigger/heavier boat.

I am likely going to buy the whip 40. The info I was able to find on here about each left me with a very good impression of both. I do like the whip stying only slightly better than the ml. People seem to have a much easier time setting up the whiplash and many comments were made about it being forgiving with cog. The people that commented about the ml gp boats had a tougher time keeping weight forward and had a tougher time setting it up. It may be that there are more whiplashs and more information about them, I dont know. I wanted it to be a build so it really came down to these two. I thought there would have been more out there. I think I will order the whip sport 40 first thing in the morning!!

The whiplash 40 sport has been purchased! Looking forward to the build and being able to use OSE members build posts to see me through. I never would have considered the purchase if it wasnt for the effort people here go to. Its a good feeling knowing what to expect (I hope!) Getting into a project like this. Hoping its here for Christmas but they build to order so I can hope away, early new year would be great!

Cool you'll enjoy building and running it. Take your time and go over everything twice and you shouldn't have any issues. Brian is a good guy, he was parked next to me at the races here in Dallas last year!

I built mine on the heavy side, added 2 part foam inside the sponsons and sanded it to shape for the top skins and reinforced the seams with carbon fiber.

Good luck and have fun with it!

Thanks for the advice and kind words. I will never race it and building it a little heavy seems like
A good idea. I have seen what happens to one when to much is cut out to accomodate batteries and
esc. The boat was run hard and built lite, after the second season it appeared to be splitting itself in half. definatly dont want that happening! Did you notice any major changes to ideal cog location (not sure where that is and how critical it is on this boat) or any handling problems wth the added foam and cf?
I was wanting to use some type of foam for the flotation and any added rigidity it offers. I am really hoping to end up with a great fit and finish on it as I would like to leave the wood natural and just seal and clearcoat then buff to a mirror finish! Something to strive for anyways. I had thoughts of working some mahogany or other wood (I have quite a collection of the stuff). If I skin over the birch I was entertaining the use of a real nice burl. logistics wise it may turn out to be a bad idea.
I have a bunch of small diameter cr rod available to me and was thinking of using them to stiffen things up. The types of forces these boats endure may make these ideas, well, remain ideas. I have seen some other hydros that used different woods, they looked real nice but they didnt appear to have much run time. My.background has a lot of machine building in it and I have seen the results when wrong material combinations are used. Glad it wasnt my money! The parallel may not even apply, it is just a wood boat afterall! I would love to hear from someone that has travelled the path as I want things to go well on this build but I really want to try something different to. I suppose thats more than enough for now. If any other builders have done a build thread on the whip I would love to hear from you and get linked to the build. I have very mixed results trying to find things on this site, seems everything but what I am looking for comes up. I know there are more builds out there, I just cant find them! Did you do a build thread or post progress pictures oscarol? I will see what else I can find. I cant wait to get it!

The foam didn't add a lot of extra weight, it balances about 1" behind sponson. I did not do a build thread for the sport 40 but did a partial on a backlash and did just about the same http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...-V3&highlight=
No issues noted with running or handling with the extra weight. http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...race-Dallas-Tx

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I really appreciate it. Things like this is what makes OSE the only place to be. I'm all over the links you sent me, I hope to see you on my build thread once I get started. I have all the tools and equipment you could ask for so I wil have nobody to blame but myself! Thanks again
