    Fast Electric Questions

    Hi guys and gals-

I'm a newbie (hate to say that after running gas and nitro for the last 10 years), but I'm looking to get some help learning. I picked up a 1/8 scale unlimited that I would eventually like to complete the conversion to F/E, once I am a little more comfortable with the technology and have the right knowledge to do so. Gotta start somewhere. I have thought about buying a kit or something rtr to try and get a feel for before delving into this. I've run f/e buggies and stadium trucks, and had the little cheapies like the hammer (great retrieval boat :)). I've built both fiberglass and wood boats; so building is not a problem. Any help, boat suggestions, links would be greatly appreciated. My first thought was to pick up an M/L Boatworks kit an give a "P" style boat a try. I wont be racing, I run just for fun, and to see what I can do speed and setup wise.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Howdy! I made the switch a few years ago as well. Feels strange to have no clue doesn't it?!?! I was pretty lost my first few months as well.
An Aquacraft UL-1 is a pretty good starter hydro to lean the ins and outs of running electrics, and fast enough to provide good entertainment.
In good shape they are also very easy to sell once you decide to move up.
I've seen and run against some M/L boats, very nice! They were on my short list for a hydro build until I came across a Whiplash 20 kit already here in Canada. Also a very nice proven 4s hydro.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

M/L boats are top notch stuff, if I knew how to properly build a wood boat, I would do it now. Mike is also a great guy do deal with. I bought a second hand tunnel, love it and Mike was so willing to help with any questions I had.
I agree that UL-1 is a nice hydro to start.
      Good luck and have fun!
Too many boats, not enough time...

I see you're in PA, so it's likely that you'll have a few months to research and learn before you make a decision............
Getting your feet wet with a rtr is certainly a great idea, but you may be just as well building a hull if that's what you like to do, as the quality will likely be better, and give you more headroom to upgrade on power.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Aquacraft quality isnt really there, I had a Top Speed 2, the hulls were thin and blah, they cornered like crap. I have heard that the turn fins pull out and the transoms on the UL 1 were suspect as well. I run on a river with a little bit of chop. I was thinking something a little better made or something I could build that would tale a UL 1 power plant and ESC and start from there. I have talked with Mike before, and have heard his kits nearly fall together, which is one of the reasons I am thinking about them. I am also watching the for sale thread.

Welcome.....here is a link for an Insane FE30 hydro which can be setup with UL1 power but is capable of much more.

Thanks, Douggie. I'm very familiar with Insane boats - I have two of their gas boats, a Thunderboat, and a Sport Hydro Gen II - One of Antron's old boats. Both were winners when they were raced. I believe my Thunderboat won the World Champs years ago when Scott Grismann had it.

                  Hi Steve,

                  Welcome aboard

Today's choices for solid FE hulls are plentiful. As has been stated, if constructing a wood hull is your cup of tea, the M/L boats are super and have well-thought design and performance elements. Should you prefer to start out with a built hull (shameless self-promotion alert:) the FE30 is another hull for consideration. I'd be happy to confer with you on any part of the acquisition and build details if you wish - hit me at [email protected] to chat.

Here's a bit of gallery with some FE30 builds :

Thanks, Tony. I'm looking at all the options right now. I do like to build "woodies;" but I have had a lot of glass boats as well. I really like the skiff in your link, that's pretty cool!
