Motor recommendation for FE Cobra Tunnel

I recently purchased a cobra 2 hull from Dan. I'm running back and forth as to what setup I want to run. I plan on this boat being a fun boat to mess around with at the local lake. My main goal would be to hopefully hit mid 50's on a 4s or 5s setup (I'll buy everything accordingly). I will be using a 3.5 Hyperformance lower unit and a custom made cowling. However, because of the cowling, the maximum motor length I can use is 58mm. So far my options are as follows:

    1) complete ul-1 step on 4s
    2) Neu 1509 2y (1820kv) on 5s, which will put me at 33,670rpm, and a 180A esc
    3) Leopard 3650 6D (2290kv) on 4s with either a 120A or 180A esc. This would put me at about 33,900rpm

Again I'm mainly looking to have some fun, as there really isn't boat racing by me. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

If you are willing to pay for the Castle/Neu, then I'd recommend a Castle/Neu 1415 1Y, 2200KV, on 4S1P. That will get you where you want to be, without over-stressing the system to do it (in other words, lots of headroom for goofing around)... Runtime won't be wonderful, but you should be able to get a couple of minutes with some bigger mAh packs (5500mAh, etc...).

      Darin,

I appreciate the quick reply. However that motor is nearly 70mm long, and it will not fit underneath the cowl unfortunately

The UL1 2030kv is such a great motor in the tunnels. I love neu motors, but I'm reluctant to put one on a boat where the motor will be constantly submerged when capsized-- I know with corrosion x the brushless motor is really ok if it gets wet, but the bearings are gonna go out more quickly, and every time you open the can to replace the bearings you risk messing something up... I like the cheaper motor options for this type of boat...

Thanks for the reply. In general, do you think the cobra would perform better on a 4s or 5s setup ? I'm curious for weight reasons, and everyone else here is much more knowledgeable on the subject.

Is the boat around 30"? For the UL1 2030KV motor, it is very happy on 4S (30,000 rpm), and you can prop it up pretty well. I run my woodstuff tunnel (29") on that motor. I use an m440-x442 prop and it hauls. I know folks who use the same boat/motor with an M445 prop and that'll get the boat into the 50's-- but I would need a beefier ESC on mine for that. I'm not sure how big your box is on the cobra but for my boat I'd have a tough time even fitting a 5S config in there (I run 2 x 2S1P packs in series).

The other consideration is what other boats do you have-- nearly all of mine are set up to run on multiples of 2S1P 5000 packs so I can leverage my lipo investment. 5S is a little high on the RPM side with the UL1 motor, but it could probably work if you had the room for 5S and really wanted to go that route.

I just bought a brand new 30 inch woodstuff over on RCU today. Im glad I found this link. Great information. I will start with the ul-1 2030 myself. What is a good way for us to start a link and compare notes on set-ups, cg, etc and stay in contact?

              Thanks,
              Allen
