help wih Zpoxy and wood for sponson mod

So I read a thread the other day about a sponson mod on my UL-1, to reduce the angle of attack. Well, one thing led to another, and now I have some pieces of a cedar shingle on my sponsons, with Z-poxy rein. Now i's my first time doing something like this, and it was kinda spur of the moment, so feel free to lmk if I went wrong somewhere. I got 3 coats of resin over it so far, block sanding in between coats a bit, but my problem is I keep sanding all the way down to the wood on the back ends trying to get the ride pads all nice and flat/sharp. Does this wood have to end up covered in resin before I paint, or can I go ahed and prime/paint to seal it up? For now, I actually don't even care about paint, so if some sealer or polyeurethane will work I'll go with that. I have some spray laquer, will that do?
Thanks for the input, I'd like to get a coat of something on now, so if anybody's out there, I'm listening.....SAM_0093.jpg
I'm also open to suggestions on shaping this, like should I just do away with the little step at the front, or will that make it even harder to get on plane?

Hi z-poxy is a great finishing resin . What i do for the final coat is brush the resin on let it sit for 15 minutes then using blue shop towels wipe of to create a smooth surface that when dry is a water proof surface if you wish to prime and paint take some red scotch brite pad sold at auto paint shops and lightly scuff surface to remove gloss and your ready to paint. I find block sanding removes to much resin usually back to bare wood. Hope this helps let me know. Regards Andris Golts.

Thanks for the input. I sprayed a couple coats of polyuerethane last night, so at least I can run i a bi today to make sure I like what it does. The cedar shingle was really just for test fitting, but it seemed to fit well and I was bored, so the next thing I knew it was epoxied right on. I fugured it's just a thin piese, so it's all reversible if I decide to do something different, what would have been better that I could get at Home Depot?
