    electric outboard leg

Hi, I am thinking of getting an outboard tunnel hull for IMBPA racing. I am wondering what outboards or outboard legs you guys would recommend. I have been looking at the Fuller's electric leg or a graupner unit among others. Is there any difference between the REK and Fuller's electric outboard leg? Because they look identical from what I've seen. So what outboard seems to be popular in the IMPBA? Thanks in advance

The REK is an OK unit. Many use them with good success...

Personally, I prefer the Lawless. It's a little more $$$, but is super light, extremely well made, and the service from Fred Howe is second to none.

O.S. Max Lower is another extremely good quality unit. It's a little spendy and uses a proprietary stub shaft and you have to use OS or OS dedicated flex cables, but it is extremely high quality and performs great. You will need to purchase the FE adapter kit for it as well: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...dh-os-23871010

The Hyperformance R/C sells a complete FE unit as well, and it's a VERY good unit also. VERY durable, well made, and solid performance: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...ullet-outboard

Regardless of which one you get, I'd highly recommend you use the Hyperformance R/C stubshafts for them (excluding the OS)... Even if you choose the REK unit. It's the most solid prop shaft available: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=hpi-psa35

One thing to consider too... the setback on these different units is, well, different. Some hulls prefer one over the other, as it does change the handling characteristics. You might want to figure out which hull you want, and find out which lower works well. The OS and the Lawless have very similar setbacks, and I've had good luck interchanging them. The Bullet moves the prop closer to the steering axis, as does the REK I believe, so please keep this in mind.

Good luck! Let us know what you come up with. OPC rocks!!

I currently use the Hyper with excellent results....have used and still own an OS lower unit that seems to be bullet-proof, and the REK, which I would never use again as the flex shafts only seem to last about 4 runs and then the snap.

By the time you put a steering arm on the Lawless and prop and flex shafts plus a trim mount you have more into it than an OS. I prefer the OS all the way as the skeg is stiffer than the Lawless. And the trim system on the mount is the best made IMO. The Fuller/REK is not as durable and only uses the K&B prop shaft which is junk compared to the OS shaft.

I am starting to lean towards the O.S.. But I just looked at the BBY racing site and saw they offer two legs, one of which is a a cut down k&B and the other a carbon fiber leg. Here is the site: http://www.bbyracing.com/elechardware.asp

But the picture next to where it saws carbon fiber leg looks like the cut down K&B leg, so that must be a mistake. So is the carbon fiber leg BBY sells any good, or is it just the REK leg again? Thanks

BTW, I'll let you guys know what I go with, but it might be around a month from now because I'm going to get the boat hull first and I'm always very careful (and unfortunately slow) about what I select.

The BBY carbon leg looks like a K&B copy and takes the K&B prop shaft with what must be a custom shorter flex cable. The OS prop shaft will stay true for a long time when lubricated properly. The K&B goes sloppy and out of round after a couple races no matter what you lube with. I guess I replace 4-5 K&Bs to one OS for wear. At $25-30 a pop the OS saves you quite a bit. And do not forget when that K&B bushing gets sloppy you are scrubbing performance away. Lawless has an option for the OS shaft and that would be the only way I would have one. The Hyperformance prop shaft is better than the K&B but still not in the league with an OS. Spend a little more for quality up front and it will be worth it.

I think I'm sold on the O.S. The boat hull will be an ML Boatworks ps295. I'll probably get it in about a month and I'll post pictures (if I can figure out how). I know this is extremely off topic, but does anyone have a new in the box Kyosho Wavemaster? Because I tried to post a thread here, but it went to the WTB forum, and I know no one looks there.
