    Shoe goo or Mono caulk?

    Hi,
I'm working on a 1/10 shovel with a carbon fiber hull-- there is a relatively large gap that needs to be sealed where the strut exits the inside of the hull.

Any thoughts on best material to seal this gap? Shoe goo or mono caulk? Or something else?

Here's a technique that's easy and neat : CA an o-ring around the gap; carefully fill with 5-min JB Qwik-Bond. (tape underside of hull to keep it from flowing through.) Then tape underside and flow some more JB around shaft on bottom. Remove tape as it cures but doesn't reach full hardening.

Jim, the JB actually does "gravity flow" when first mixed. Slop it on carefully/neatly & it smooths itself out.

Works well to neatly seal servo rod pass through tube. Apply on tube & push into place - JB forms perfect looking waterproof seal

It is a little colder up here just may have to add a little heat in the form of warming the tubes up before mixing or a hair dryer after application to get it to flow better. I have always used epoxy with a thickener in it and taped the bottom and used wax-paper so the epoxy won't stick to the tape.

Let me clarify-- I'm not talking about the stuffing tube-- I'm talking about the strut bracket.

Hey properchopper, I have that same servo mount in my mean machine and in my MHZ Shockwave M and cant seem to get epoxy or fiberglass resin to keep it from breaking loose? Have you had this problem with that mount? I am almost to the point that I want to just screw it to the hull...(which is not what I want to resort to)

Rich, Never had a problem since I :

roughened up the bottom of the mount on the belt sander

scuffed the poo-poo out of the hull mating surface with super agressive sandpaper

USED West Systems G-Flex 24 hr cure epoxy ( some of the ONLY stuff to use to keep things in place for GOOD)

I hear ya ! Took the quick way out on a P-Ltd Mono using 30-min cure with the same mount; darn thing broke loose during a heat race. CA'd it in and raced more heats-it held but ultimately G-Flexed it in when I got back home.

What's most important rich, is sanding the crap outta the surfaces first. I mean real well....
I use those mounts without problem like tony.

That stuff is pricey! It is cheaper then loosing a boat to a pier or a wall though, ill look into getting it. I was pushing my boats hard in the turns. The meanmachine is a heavy hull with two 5s 5000 packs....

I hit both the hull and the mount with my dremel and scratch the heck out of it! I'll try and hit it some more and see what happens. Like I was telling tony, I was pushing hard in the corners at full throttle, at 55 mph thats a lot of force....

Just get some shoe goo. In less than 24hrs all will be said and done. And if you place the hull in a vertical position, nose up. It will pool better around the hardware penetrating thru the transom. BTW I like to thin my SG with Toluene if you need to.
