    Need Advice on Bearing Swap

Has anyone attempted to change the bearings in a Lehner motor? One of my 2280's sound rough. I am thinking of changing the bearings myself befor attempting to send it back to Germany. Also need to know what bearing will be needed to replace stock ones. The motors have 5mm shaft also. While I am at it I may as well do the other motor also......that way both motors will be fresh!

    Thanks for any info.......

I havent done a large Lehner but have pulled apart both of my Lehner Basic motors and a ton of Neu's and KB's, Fiegaos, yada, yada.............so motor disassembly is not a mystery to me. Most quality bearings are normaly marked with some form of identification. All you need is the right tools to take any of them apart. I always recommend you take off the motor face plate. Not the end plate where a some makers glue that side on. Typicaly most motors have the face plate unscrew to gain access. Just accept thats the side you want to deal with.

Now you need the right tools. Not as difficult as you think. I made a shell clamp fixture from plywood glued together to make a 3 x 3 x 3 block. Locate the center and using a 1 3/4 hole saw drill out the center. Then use a table saw or band saw and cut it in half. You now have a clamping fixture. Buy some silicone or rubber sheeting in 1/16" and 1/8" thickness and you have the filler material. That makes it easier to adapt one fixture to varying motor diameters. Get yourself a piece 1/8th" of flat stock aluminum, like 1 1/4"wide and cut it 8 inches long. Drill one motor hole pattern on one side (25mm on center) and another ( with slotted holes) on the other end. Lastly a bench vice too!

You can now take apart 99% of all motors available to us RC'ers. Probably 100% as I have yet to find a motor I cannot take apart but big outrunners have never been in my fleet so I'm going to allow for a 1% learning curve. I dont see a challenge there.

I can post a pic of all the items I have described if needed? We are a bunch of clever personas so needing a service of bearing replacement is probably a business thats not going to grow or even thrive. There are a bunch of bearing manufacturers out there so swapping bearings should be an easy task.

The one thing I didnt cover would be the bearing seating tools but those are going to be specialized tools depending on shaft size and bearing diameter. Still, easy to design and create with some 1/2" and 3/4" alum round stock.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Isnt that how the saying goes!

Thanks for the words of wisdom John. I have a "handyman" mentality so if I can do it myself I will. I love that feeling of completion when I can say I did that. I especially like the tip on the shell clamp. I will have one made tomorrow and will order some bearings also. I had Lehner motors before and know what they look like on the inside. Would you say it is safe to use a wooden dowel as a seating tool for the bearings?
