Racing a BBY UL-1
I am also in the process of slowly building a BBY UL-1 as well. I purchased it (more like stole it) here in the swap shop from awhile back pretty much already built.
My UL-1 is built very similar to Jimmy's, but has Randy's racing hardware on it with a .150 flex cable.
I am thinking about getting into racing with this boat, but I am wondering what class do most people run this boat in? I guess it could qualify for LSH, N2 Sport Hydro, P Sport Hydro classes, but I am looking for the best fit to be somewhat competitive.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Brad

cool , no problem. do you have any pics of your boat and setup , would really like to see what it is suposed to look like. i am in oklahoma city area and i have never seen any rc boat racing or any other boats for that matter , just got into it to give me something to do to take my mind off disc golf for a while (have to take a year or two off till new baby is big enough to travel). the old lady has been very understanding of both , i am really enjoying the rc thing though and blame harbor freight for the yellow bee that got it all started ! please though if anyone els has pics of ul-1 kit builds post here , i think it would be cool to see more boats like mine and what people have done with them.
thanx for comments

Wow, that's asking a lot! My digital photos don't go back that far. What's in the manual? I had a bunch of pix in when I wrote it, but don't know if Randy kept them or not. I'll try to remember to bring the PDF or Word version. PM me your e-mail (it's too big to post). I may also have shots that didn't make it in. I'll do what I can.
Attached is a picture of my 1999 Nats O Sport boat, which won Concours. That's about all I have available right now. Give me a day or two.

that is a very nice boat to andy , i notice that the nose on yours as well as jeffs seems a little pointier than mine , is that a trait that was changed or something ? and i wish i would have moved my tail fins back a little more ! i do hope my paint looks half as smooth as yours when i get it done , i was thinking of makeing it a yellow and blue corona boat , ill post pics as i get into it. thanx again for the interest.

It's the result of making it as realistic looking as possible. After gluing top and bottom and using epoxy resin to make a fillet on the inside (first manual), I trimmed and sanded off ALL the shoebox overhang and then applied a little filler on the outside and rounded the edge.
It's a lot of extra work, but let me put it in perspective. I built two of these hulls (a red UL-72 Pocket Mechanic and the UL-10 Earls shown above) from scratch in about 2-3 days, sanded and painted. In fact, the gloss coat wasn't fully cured when I boxed the boats up to ship to FL, then ran the snot out of them.
If you find pictures of DTJr with the yellow one, this is the same hull. I forget what happened to my Pocket Mechanic. I used to loan it to friends a lot. Jeff Wohlt got to run it for a while - gave him a new sense of what "fast" is :)

What prop do you suggest I start with?
I have a 3/16" propshaft so I figured I would start with the smallest 3/16" prop I have (x536) and go up watching my temps after a minute or two of run time.
Is that a good starting point?

That 6L is a little hot if the 537 is too big I make step down 3/16 to 1/8 prop shafts with .150 flex shaft. I would have went with the 8L if it were me.
I do run the 6L in my drag boat with 16 cells and a 432 prop.Comment

Just as a point of reference. My last year's N-2 mono was a BBY Ovalmaster 26, 6L, Castle 125, 2S2P 10,000k maxamps packs and an X637/X438 prop.
That was on a well dialed in race boat. You should be OK w/ the prop you want to start with, but check temps often until you are comfortable with your complete setup and that nothing is over-taxed.Comment

Thanks for the input guys it is appreciated.
Randy,
I figured 30,000 RPMs was a good range for a N2 Sport Hydro so that is why I went with a (6L) 4096kv x 7.4V =30,310 RPMs.
Do you really think (8L) 3072kv x 7.4V = 22,732 RPMs is where I need to be at to heat race it?
By the way, how do you keep a Feigao 6L together at those RPMs?!?!?
4096kv x 19.2V = 78643 RPMS!!!
I figured there would be shrapnel exploding from the hull spinning a Feigao that fast even for 4 seconds.
No sarcasm intended, by the way, I am just a little perplexed.
Thanks,

Brad the cells were the 2/3 sub C cells they do not have the power that Lipo does. it was short runs 1/4 mile scale. I still have the boat and after Dan Chase comes back to RC Boats I will be running it.
8L was my choice, Dave has done well with the 6L you got it try it.Comment

Randy,
Thanks again for your input.
I realize between you and Andy, no one knows these original UL-1 hulls like you guys do, so I will heed your advice.
I will look for an 8L to try as well and probably leave the 6L for the SAW and 2 Lap events.
